Nancy Phillips stifled a yawn as she listened to Adele Davis’s litany of
complaints against her husband Ben.
“He never helps around the house, he drops his clothes on the floor
when the hamper is within reach, and he hogs the television every night so I
can’t watch my favorite shows.”
“Ben, is this true?”
Ben shrugged and said, “I guess. But I work hard all day, feeding
animals and mending fences, taking care of the place. I deserve to rest when
I come in.”
Nancy turned to Adele. “And what is your day like, Adele?”
“I cook breakfast, get the kids off to school, clean the house, do laundry,
fix Ben’s lunch, work in the garden, pay the bills, help the kids with their
homework, fix dinner, get the kids to bed…”
Nancy cut her off mid-sentence. “Ben, do you think Adele’s job is easier
than yours?”
He looked away before nodding. “Yeah. I do hard, physical labor. She
only has the house to take care of.”
The thundercloud building on Adele’s face told Nancy it was time to
intervene. “Okay, here’s what I want you to do. Take ten minutes to make a
list of what you do and don’t like about each other. Try really hard to
remember why you fell in love in the first place and see if you think your
marriage is worth keeping. If it is, we’ll work on it. If not, I’ll point you
towards a divorce lawyer.”
The shock on both their faces told her they hadn’t thought that far ahead.
“I’m going to step out for a minute,” she said, placing legal pads on the desk
in front of them. “Make your lists so we can discuss them when I come
back.”
She left the office and retreated to the kitchen. A cup of very strong
coffee sounded really good, along with a few moments of silence. If she had
to listen to one more whining couple today, she’d probably explode.
It wasn’t the Davis’s fault. They were just one of many young couples
who forgot they were supposed to support one another, not see how many
faults they could find. But she’d had about all she could stand of marriage
counseling.
This wasn’t how she wanted to spend her life. She’d only gotten
into it to help Jean get started, and she’d stayed in it way too long. For a
while she’d thought about helping Mark in his private practice, but that
wasn’t what she wanted, either. So what else could she do? There was the
hospital, of course. But working on a ward didn’t appeal to her.
Nancy thought again about how much she’d enjoyed working with Jake
Reilly on his rehab. Every little recovery had been a reason to celebrate and
she’d felt a true sense of satisfaction at the end of each day.
When ten minutes had passed, she returned to the office to finish her
session with the Davis’s. As soon as they’d agreed they wanted to work on
their marriage rather than end it, she gave them an assignment that involved
switching chores for a day, scheduled their next session, and sent them on
their way. Then she picked up the phone and made an appointment to meet
with Dr. Harris at the rehab center.
