Going to your best friend’s wedding with a blind date as your plus one might
sound like a fun, quirky idea…
Until said plus one drinks a little too much red wine and proceeds to roll a
huge, sloppy meatball right off his plate and onto your blush pink
bridesmaid’s dress.
“He’s just so excited for the happy couple,” I offer cheerfully as an
explanation to the table of stunned bridesmaids and their dates while subtly
dabbing at the stain on my lap. Lucky for me, by the time I found Eddie
wandering around the garden and sat him down for dinner, the food was
already cold. No chance of getting a meatball-shaped burn on my upper
thigh.
It’s the little things.
“Do you need help, Dais?” Val, one of the bridesmaids, holds a napkin
aloft with a sympathetic expression.
I give her a bright smile in return. “I’m okay, thanks.”
Val goes back to chatting happily with her husband Ethan, and I continue
scrubbing at the red splotch. This is what I get for asking to be set up: a lap
full of tomato sauce and a date who spends a suspicious amount of time
lingering by bushes.
But maybe I’m not being fair to Eddie. The guy seems about as shady as
a ladybug and he’s repeated—more than a few times—that he normally
doesn’t drink. He’s probably just as nervous as I am about this blind date
business.
I decide to brush it off, lighten the mood. “I’m sure I can work this into
my maid of honor speech. Something about Lady and the Tramp, maybe.
Right, Ed…?”
I trail off. My date has, once again, disappeared. It’s an impressive feat,
to be honest. The hundreds of fairy lights strung up in the trees, around the
gazebo, and along the paths of the Brookrose Garden—not to mention the
flickering candles on the tables—flood the garden with light. A dreamy,
enchanting light… but lots of it nonetheless.
“Excuse me.” I rise to a stand in what I hope is a graceful, elegant, poised
kind of way. Val and Ethan thankfully don’t spare me much of a glance, so I
think I’ve done an okay job cleaning myself up and retaining some shred of
dignity.
Until I turn around. A couple of guests at the table behind us—Courtney
from the hair salon, and her date Shane (of the infamous “Dude Crew” as I
call them, and a pretty surprising plus one for the sweet, mild-mannered girl,
if you ask me)—both look at me with a certain amount of surprise. Courtney
politely averts her gaze, but Shane isn’t quite so tactful and instead points
directly at the comet-shaped stain on my dress with his mouth open like he’s
about to say something.
This would normally be time to come up with something smart and
sarcastic. Channel my inner Lorelai Gilmore and knock everyone’s socks off
with my quick wit. Instead, I hold my hands up in surrender. “Gotta love
spaghetti!”
