If asked, anyone who had ever met Makron—Mak, to many— would be
quick to say that they’d rather see him dead than invite him over for
dinner. That didn’t keep the invitations for work from coming his way.
Not even a little. The services of Mak and his crew of Wanderers were in
high demand. He was smart enough to ensure his clients courted him with
lavish parties and exclusive getaways to earn his favor. Not to mention a fair
percentage of legal work to go with their less smiled upon shipping needs.
Mak rarely turned away a job if the price was right.
Wanderer’s Dream had contracts queued up for the next five years.
That he was a pirate was the worst-kept secret in the universe. It didn’t
keep him or his fellow Wanderers from rubbing elbows with the staunchest
critics of his chosen profession. He was good at his job, only took lives when
backed into a corner, and was emphatically non-partisan about the cause
behind his paycheck. Most didn’t even bother to hide their valuables when
they had him over to discuss a job. They knew he kept his work professional
and his play confined to activities that would not disrupt their status quo. The
odds of his particular skills being required at some point were too high to
alienate him.
Unfortunately, today was all about the work.
“My Fellow Wanderer on Systems best get that alarm turned off,” Mak
growled from his position in the captain’s chair on the bridge of his ship.
The title belonged to everyone on the crew and saved them from needing
to know names. Turnover on the ship was not high, but without a bunch of
people able to call out their pasts, quite a number of his ex-Wanderers had
gone on to lucrative careers in normal society. Mak’s was the only name ever
spoken out loud while on board. Any chance he had at stepping out of the
shadows had long since passed. He was what he was and had no shame for it.
The faces of any crew were forgettable. But everyone knew what the captain
looked like.
“I cannot conduct a proper fight in the middle of a Hylantic Besting
Celebration. Our friends out there require a symphony of precisely delivered
torpedoes, not this cacophony of light and sound,” Mak added sharply.
“On it, Mak,” the man currently burrowed into the space beneath his
station said as he yanked a handful of wires free.
Blessed silence descended on the bridge, along with a return to normal
lighting. Mak nearly sighed with relief. Minutes mattered, hell, seconds
mattered at a time like this, so instead, he narrowed his focus and called out
coordinates.
“Four down, one to go,” the Fellow Wanderer on weapons called out as
their missiles hit home. “We could just make this easy—”
“When have I ever gone for easy?” Mak barked a laugh. “I’d prefer not to
send you out the airlock today, so keep your ideas to yourself. We cripple the
ship. We do not destroy it. Asben-Felek may be a customer one day, after
all.” Felek was another pirate whom Mak considered his greatest adversary.
