Present Day
The dock creaks as I step out of the boat; the boards looking old and
weathered. I wrap my arms around my waist as the wind kicks up and blows
my curls in front of my face. It’s a warm day, but a chill settles into my
bones, giving the place an authentic Christmas feel.
Do I feel a similar energy here as I did at Belgrove? No.
I’m not being pulled to enter the grounds as if a tether has slipped
between my ribs and settled around my heart, but I do feel something
ominous. Terrible things happened here, and it’s only a matter of time before
James gives us all the gory details.
I will admit, this time I didn’t do any research. With the echoing
remnants of Belgrove still coursing through me, it was too hard to face the
horror of this place. Another set of chains, rusted and eroded, are wrapped
through a looming, industrial steel fence, and I look over my shoulder to find
Connor standing there, his eyes sparkling with glee.
“I’ve never been to a theme park before,” he says, his mouth climbing
with a childlike grin.
“We went to Universal Studios the year we graduated from high
school,” I remind him as my forehead crumples with concern. Connor has not
been himself since we left Belgrove, and as much as I understand that we all
cope with trauma differently, he’s recovered quite fast. He’s even been more
jovial than ever, which has been uncomfortable at some points, considering
the rest of us have had trouble being happy at all.
“Right.” He nods, keeping his eyes straight ahead, the wide grin still
lining his mouth.
“Let’s walk up together,” Nick suggests as he stands next to Connor,
grabbing his hand.
In one swift motion, Connor shakes Nick’s hand from his own, without
a single glance at him, and says, “Let’s not be a bunch of girls.”
Connor runs hot and cold these days, and we’ve all chalked it up to him
dealing with what we’ve been through, but I can see how much it affects
Nick. His shoulders immediately deflate as his eyes linger on their unclasped
hands. I just want to wrap him in my arms and soothe away the rejection.
Heat hits my back and I have to bite my bottom lip when I smell musk
and citrus. James’ breath coats over my neck as he leans down to whisper,
“Are you okay?” As much as he and I have been getting comfortable in our
relationship, it’s still a bit awkward for me around the others. We haven’t
taken the time to explore that yet.
I nod, not trusting my voice at the moment, making him chuckle. He
knows exactly what kind of effect he has on me. Where I’m still treading in
fresh waters with Nick and Connor, James and I have no issues with our
relationship. It’s a weird dynamic when your boyfriend is happy to share you
with his two best friends, who are also seeing each other.
Thankfully, we don’t care how it’s perceived, because we only have
each other in this world, no one else matters.
