1982, NEW YORK CITY.
Hell’s Kitchen. Where Demons Dine.
Razor-sharp claws and cold fingers of steel wrapped around my throat,
cutting off all attempts at air. White fangs flashed as my attacker moved his
gaping maw toward my wrist. I groped in vain, desperately trying to push
away the vice-like grip while attempting to avoid those 2-inch teeth.
Blood coated every inch of his torso. His chest and stomach had been
ripped wide open, and half of his intestines were falling out of his body. His
instinct urged him to take my blood to heal himself but getting killed by a
vampire was not on my list of things to do today. This was so not in my job
description.
Eyes watering, I calmed myself as much as possible and laid my hands on
the chest of my captor. I blocked out the screaming of the blood servants as
they tried to dislodge his choking hands and pin him down.
I centered my magic, shoving it into him. A rush of heat flowed from my
palms, and golden light accompanied the gauzy sensation of my magic as it
mended his torn flesh. Usually, I send my magic into my patients much more
slowly, but the luxury of time was not on my side. It was my life or his—and
he was already dead.
As my magic coursed through him and closed his wounds, diminishing
the pain and his drink to survive instinct, recognition flashed in his eyes. He
immediately retreated, slammed back onto his cot, and looked at me with
something akin to horror. He managed to rasp a weak apology before losing
consciousness.
My hands reflexively went to my neck as I coughed and tried to suck in
much-needed air. I had to heal myself before exhaustion overtook me. I
pushed my last bit of energy into mending my crushed throat and frantically
gasped in the elusive air my lungs so desperately craved. Just another day in
the life of an undercover healer for the vampire seethe.
While vampires’ abilities allowed them to regenerate quickly, they
required blood to repair their bodies. Usually, that was enough, but when the
healing needed to happen more rapidly, they came to their resident fae for
help. I was only required when things were serious, and this morning, they’d
been quite grave indeed. Not just for the vampires, either—I’d nearly lost my
life trying to heal one of them.
Needing a mental and physical break, I walked down three flights of steps
in the unassuming building that was the epicenter of the vampire community.
Some species enjoyed showing off or had royalty that lived in more
prominent places to make their subjects feel small. However, the vampires
seemed fine to live in a building that was not too different than the ones
around it, at least on the outside.
Humans build enormous palaces for their royalty, but the king of the
vampires preferred to live in an office building rather than some expansive
castle. He was a practical man, and his base of operations reflected that.
The vamps had employed me for five years, and I found it easier to go to
work when it just seemed like any other building. It helped me forget that I
was entering the nest of one of the world’s most dangerous beings.
