Caleb leaned negligently against the barracks walls watching as his Captain
put the rest of his squadron through their magical paces. Although there
were only four members per Unit within the Isa Army, a squadron held
thirty-six. Which meant there was a lot of magic in the air – as well as a lot of
swearing.

He wasn’t joining in because there wasn’t really anything any of them
could do that would best him. He wasn’t being cocky or egotistical, it was
simply a fact. He may have been relatively young at twenty-four years old,
but he was the strongest mage to be born in hundreds of years – that they
knew of anyway. So instead of testing and fine-tuning his magical abilities
with his brothers and sisters in arms, he stood by and watched them get their
arses kicked. It was endlessly amusing, especially when two of them were his
older brothers by blood.

“Speak of the devil,” Caleb murmured, taking a single step to the right.
The body that landed next to him, rather than on top of him, began cursing
creatively in two languages. Caleb raised his eyebrows, impressed. “Since
when do you speak French?”

Jasper’s brown eyes, so similar to Caleb’s own, narrowed in annoyance.
“Since I dated that visiting French officer last month.” He brushed the grass
off his maroon tunic before demanding, “Are you going to help me up or
not?”
“I’m thinking not,” Caleb replied, fighting to keep a straight face. Jasper
was the clown of the family but also the easiest to rile.
“Not? What the hell?! Oh, let me guess, the prodigal son doesn’t want to
lower himself to assist the humble – yet exceedingly handsome – mage
officer,” Jasper snarked.

Caleb smirked at his brother. “Your exceedingly handsome face appears
to have shit on it,” he pointed out, gesturing to a dark patch on Jasper’s
cheek. “Plus, I believe ‘dating’ is a gross exaggeration of what you and the
Frenchwoman were doing.”
Jasper grunted, wiping frantically at his face with the sleeve of his
uniform. “Don’t be jealous, baby bro. I’m sure your balls will drop any day
now, and you’ll have the ladies lining up.”

Caleb watched as Jasper eyed the brown mess on his cuff before
cautiously sniffing it, not once, but twice. “Uh-huh. You’re right. I’m so
jealous,” Caleb said dryly. But he still held out his hand and pulled his
brother to his feet. He was about to offer some suggestions of what Jasper
could do with his shit stain when their Captain called out.
“Hey! If you’ve both finished with your tea party, maybe you’d like to
join the rest of us for, you know, your job!” Orion yelled from his position in
the centre of the large, open training area.

“You know, he does sarcasm really well,” Caleb pointed out mildly,
ignoring the older man’s heavy frown.
Jasper nodded his head, his expression serious. “He does. He’s also
awesome at being passive-aggressive.”
