How did everything go so wrong?
The Yule Cat ran along the edge of a roof, calling to the wind to cover his
tracks in the dense snow falling around him.
The flakes stuck in his silverwhite coat, obscuring the dark circles on his pelt. He had no tribute to bring
to the Winter Queen. Not once had he returned without a new servant for her
Court.
There would be a punishment. He would endure it, whatever it was, as
long as she could help him purge this affliction in his chest. His heart was
filled with… warmth. His fur stood on end as the skin beneath it crawled
from the memory of the child’s touch. She had hugged him. Hugged him—a
fierce snow leopard twice her size with glowing blue eyes, fangs longer than
her fingers, and gleaming mist trailing from his pelt.
That tiny mortal had thrown a blanket over his shoulders as if he needed
her help. As if a mortal had anything to offer a mighty Fairy Lord, one of the
only two in the Winter Queen’s Yuletide Court. The child had wrapped her
arms around him, wanting him to be warm, even though she had so little to
warm herself.
The heat in his heart grew stronger, like a fire that had been lit within. A
fire he didn’t want any part of, didn’t know what to do with. He was the Lord
of the North Wind, icy and cruel. He tore warmth from others, leaving cold in
its wake. He didn’t accept it. He didn’t need it for himself. He didn’t want it.
Did he?
The Yule Cat let out a roar like thunder. Around him, the snowflakes
shuddered, then paused, spinning in place as he pulled on the pocket of Faerie
ruled by the Yuletide Fae. Light burst into being, a spiraling vortex of energy.
He charged to the corner of the roof and leapt, arcing his back as he soared
through the portal.
The light was so much colder than he remembered. On the other side, he
landed in a drift, a shiver coursing through him as he shook his pelt free of
moisture. His heat melted the snow clinging to his fur. The portal sealed
behind him, the snap of its closure seeming to mark his failure complete.
An unfamiliar dread filled his stomach as he stalked toward the crystalline
castle in the distance, rising from the snow and reflecting the verdant aurora
flooding the dark sky overhead. When he reached the tall gates, they opened,
motes of light threading through their faceted surface. Curious energy tickled
his nose and tingled along his back, glowing lights of every color flying close
and picking at his coat—pixies and sprites checking him over, as if the child
he was supposed to have brought might be hiding in his fur. Their light
caught in the hundreds of snowflakes slowly spinning, suspended in the air of
the castle.
