JamieĀ
I smoothed my hand over my baby bump, feeling one of the little guys
kicking at my ribs. They were still too small for the kicks to feel like much
more than flutters, but I loved their attention all the same.

Oliver offered me a hand as I stepped up to my seat. I accepted his fingers
for only a moment as I lowered myself into the desk chair and let go without
allowing myself to feel anything toward him. He walked around the table,
taking his own seat directly across from mine.

My eyes followed the lawyer as she entered the room, striding toward us
and taking the chair between ours.
The three of us occupied the end of a long table in the law officeā€™s meeting
room. Sleek, glass window-walls met gray paint, with dark wood and black
leather desk chairs completing the cold feeling of the space.

The lawyer opened her folder. It was growing thickā€”Oliver and I had
been exchanging a lot of emails, and each of them was in her folder. He had
given me a week to think about what I wanted, but unfortunately, heā€™d had
the same amount of time to decide what he wanted.

It had been a hectic week, to say the least. Some of my best friends had
taken over as Alphas of All, Iā€™d found out I was pregnant with not one baby,
but three, and Iā€™d moved into my home in upstate New York. Plus, Iā€™d finally
felt my babies kick for the first time.

ā€œSo, before we begin, I feel obligated to remind you that your mating
contract wasnā€™t an official legal document,ā€ the lawyer began.
ā€œOf course,ā€ Oliver said smoothly, ā€œbut our marriage is.ā€
My eyes skidded to my bare fingers. My fatherā€™s assistant had purchased
my wedding ring, so I wasnā€™t attached to it. Iā€™d stopped wearing it when I
moved out of the apartment Oliver and I shared, but I doubted heā€™d noticed.

ā€œYes, I have the divorce papers here.ā€ The lawyer leaned over the armrest
of her chair and tugged a thick packet from her bag on the floor. She handed
it to Oliver, whose eyes narrowed as he looked at me.
I met his gaze steadily. ā€œYou said I had a week to think about it. This is
what Iā€™ve been thinking about.ā€

ā€œI wonā€™t sign.ā€ Oliver handed the papers back to the lawyer. Her
expression remained neutral as she accepted them.
ā€œYou know that will only slow the process, not stop it,ā€ I said.
ā€œIt will buy me the time I need to make you fall in love with me,ā€ he
countered.

Emotions warred within me at his words. On one hand, Iā€™d been desperate
for his love for a long time. We had been mated for nearly four years, and
heā€™d barely showed me a sliver of affection. He rarely touched me, and weā€™d
only had sex a handful of timesā€”all of them when it was mating season and
our hormones took control. I was good at hiding it, but I had a high sex drive
and our lack of physical contact hurt me a lot.
