“Wheeee!”
Someone’s having fun. I wonder if the kid’s riding his shopping cart.
“Whoa!”
As I turn the corner, I barely get my cart out of the way as one comes
barreling down the store aisle. Who is she? She’s riding on the back of the
cart after pushing it and letting it glide.

“Auntie H, can we do it again? Please!”
Anti-h? What does that mean?
“I’m so sorry.”
She doesn’t sound sorry, and her little boy is giggling. This woman with
the purple and pink hair and infectious smile is adorable as she rubs noses
with her son. I bet Laura will be like that with Konstantin and Mila one day.
Minus the wild hair.
“Don’t worry about it. I should have used a turn signal.”
Did I just try to make a joke? Her smile just got bigger, so maybe it
worked.

“Are you a superhero?”
I look down at the little boy, who must be about five. Hardly, little one.
“No. I’m just a regular guy. Why? Do I look like Superman?”
“The Hulk! Arrrgh!”
“Cadence.”
The pink and purple-haired woman hisses the boy’s name. But if he’s
going to choose any superhero, that’s probably the right one. Size and
temper.

“It’s all right. Why the Hulk?”
We’re standing in the cereal aisle discussing why I remind this kid of a
green giant who isn’t jolly.
“Because you’re big with big muscles like the Hulk. Why are you so big
if you’re not a superhero?”
Just like my three brothers and four cousins, I’m nearly six-foot-five, and
I work out twice a day nearly every day.

“I played a lot of sports growing up, and I like to work out a lot now. I
also eat all my fruits and vegetables.”
“I don’t like vegetables.”
“That’s not true. I watched you eat a bowl of carrots and ranch at lunch.”
The woman grins at her son.
“I needed something to hold my ranch. Auntie H, don’t tell Mommy how
much ranch you let me have.”

“Shh. It’s our secret. I didn’t expect it to come out of the bottle so fast.”
Ah! Auntie H. I’ve lived in New York more than half my life, but I still
miss some things in English. The little boy looks back at me after turning an
earnest expression to his aunt.
“Will I get to be as big as you if I work out and eat my vegetables?”
“You might.”

I’m watching this woman as much as I’m watching the kid, but I can tell
she’s looking at me even when my attention is on him. Does she think I’m
some creeper talking to her nephew? Why am I nervous that I don’t live up to
her expectations? She expects nothing from me.
“Cadence, we should let this nice gentleman finish his shopping.”
The little boy waves to me as I maneuver my cart around the pair.

“Bye, Hulk.”
“Cadence.”
She hisses his name again and shakes her head.
“Don’t worry. Hulk won’t smash.”
I wink, and it’s as much for her as it is Cadence.
“Thank you.”
