The monsters chased Alan McHenish right out of his own
dream.
He woke with a start and nearly fell off his high bunk.
While gripping the edge of the wood, he looked at the barn floor below and
realized that if one of the creatures found its way to his bedside, its head
would be near to level with his own.
Damn Urban MacKenzie anyway. Why had the man felt it necessary to
describe those beasts with such detail? How could he expect Alan to ever
sleep again?
The nightmares came more frequently now, thanks to Banner Wallace’s
recent vision. But Alan also blamed their recurrence on the fact that there
were fewer men about the place, thus fewer distractions in the evening. Far
less snoring since MacTavish had moved out. Far fewer feet shuffling at all
hours and giving Alan an excuse to put a pillow over his head.
Now, a pillow over the head would leave him vulnerable to the enemy.
And when he did slip into a deep and restful sleep, he didn’t remain long. He
suspected the lack was turning him into an arse during daylight hours. But
what was the help for it?
By all accounts, one beast was dead and its body sent back to another
realm. And if he could trust it couldn’t return, that left one more. Just the one.
Alan shook his head, wishing he could convince his unconscious mind to
keep an accurate count.
THE NIGHT AIR TASTED OF OCTOBER, THOUGH SEPTEMBER HAD BARELY
begun. The moon loomed near the earth and lit the property like a great
bulging eye intent on taking in every detail. Its reflection off the metal roof of
the bathhouse made the night brighter still, which helped Alan relax a mite.
He exhaled completely and let his shoulders drop. Nothing could expect to
slither onto the ranch unnoticed tonight—though those monsters weren’t the
type to slither, were they?
No. Just the one monster. Probably not so bold now that it was alone. And
sentient enough to understand the place was well-guarded. Or so it was,
usually.
Where were the guards?
Alan turned in a circle and searched for a flash of torchlight, his ears
straining for the buzz of a four-wheeled rover checking the perimeter.
Nothing.
The house was quiet, the windows dark. The massive tree behind it, still
as a picture. Was he still in his dream?
His ears perked. Quiet staccato whispers came from the direction of the
bathhouse. So faint they might be in his head. So faint he heard nothing over
the sound of his own breathing as he sprinted up the hill. With his shadow
behind him, he headed for the east side of the building, took only a few
seconds to slow his breathing, then inched toward the back corner.
