It might appear strange, but now that I read her message that Jamila said I
should call her, I knew it could be news about a business break or
pregnancy.
As time passed and I continued to think about what her short and direct
message could mean, I began more and more to feel convinced that it was
the latter rather than the former. Jamila had enjoyed business successes
before, and she didn’t rush to break the news or announce it with the
excitement that hat greeted this one, except if the business had unbelievable
prospects.
But I was never going to wager in favor of a business break. My heart and
common sense pointed me towards pregnancy. It was more of my emotions
telling me that the only exciting news that Jamila might want to share was
that she wanted to be a mother.
I spent some time reflecting on what that might mean, for Jamila and me
and our relationship, if it were the case. We’ve not had any chance to sit and
talk about such an issue. The closest discussion we have had was about the
possibility of getting married.
But that discussion didn’t end well. I knew that Jamila wasn’t quite pleased
with my reaction. It was the only reaction I had then. It was a spot-of-the-
moment thing for me. Now, I had time to think and gather my thoughts
before I would face her; that would be if the important and exciting
message were that she was pregnant with my child.
Of course, I would be happy to be a father, even though I felt the time
hadn’t come for me to do so. But if it turned out that Jamila had dragged me
into fatherhood without my volition, I would be disappointed because it
would only mean one thing: a lack of trust.
But I wouldn’t want to think or harbor such a negative sentiment towards
Jamila. Therefore, the issue now was, what should be the appropriate
response in the situation I expected to find myself? It was a hypothetical
case, and the longer I thought about it, it looked more likely to be the
reality.
