ELIA
I screamed as the magic overtook me. The sensation was foreign,
but I welcomed it, embracing the slight burn and the white-hot anger in my
soul as I created a portal to escape my circumstances on the other side of
The Great Chasm with two unknown males.
The world spun, and I fought to keep control. The male had a death grip
on my arm and was still holding tight when the world ceased whirling.
I looked around, blinking in the dense greenery that surrounded us.
“Where in the blasted realm are we?” I asked. If anyone had spoken to
me with that voice, I’d have cowered in their presence. As it was, I was
waiting for the male to do the same.
“Somewhere you haven’t been to since you were a youngling. Your
portals need work, so I redirected us. We are in the Kingdom of Helum.
Welcome home, Elia, daughter of elves.”
“Home?” I scoffed, mustering as much disdain as I could. “This is not
my home. And my mother is fae. I am fae.”
I barely registered the words as they tumbled from my lips. I let out a
forceful breath and placed my hands on my knees now that the world had
settled under my feet. Portaling continued to be a horrible experience. Both
times had left me heaving and desperately trying not to vomit on the lush
moss underfoot. At least for the first time, Axel had been with me and
warned me as we landed in the Temore Region.
Saliva pooled in my mouth, and I forced it down as my surroundings
finally registered. Oh, come on! I was in another blasted, unknown forest.
Comparing it to The Hunter’s Forest was an unconscious reflex. The
trees all still shot upward, and the chirp of birds singing in the boughs was
the same, but that was where the similarities ended.
I couldn’t even tell you the names of these trees with their fat trunks and
wide, flat leaves. Stones were strewn on the ground, as if giants had been
playing with dice, and the moss below was springy, dotted with small
flowers and mushrooms poking their heads out of the thick green blanket.
It was beautiful, but it also felt oppressive. So much green in one space,
shrouding us in their hues as the dappled sunlight poked through the layered
canopy.
