A bead of sweat trickled down Thomas Matthew’s face as he stood at the
far end of a field, debating his options. He needed to be on the other
side of the fence if he wanted to finish his work for the day, but that meant
crossing in front of the angry bull who was quite miffed at being woken up.
The look in the bull’s eyes meant business, and Thomas was quite sure he
didn’t want any part of that transaction.

Thomas usually took the long way around, but something at the end of
the field had caught his eye. If he was seeing things right, one of the cows
was laying at an awkward angle, with a hoof straight up in the air. That
wasn’t how cows slept, and it certainly wasn’t how they relaxed. Something
was wrong, and Thomas wasn’t going to leave until he knew what it was.
He measured the distance in his mind. If he got a running head start, he
might be able to beat the bull to the other side of the pasture. He gave it
maybe a 70% chance that he wouldn’t end up gouged by the sharp horns that
sat on the bull’s head. During their last encounter, the bull had won. Thomas
wore the scar down his hip, a battle wound that ached whenever he stretched
the wrong way

Some days racing a bull to the fence seemed worth the chance, but
Thomas wasn’t sure this was one of them. If the cow was injured, she was
going to need real help. Not a human who was potentially nursing a new
wound of his own from the bull’s horns. He went back to the ATV and drove
it in a wide circle around the bull’s enclosure, stopping a little ways back so
he didn’t startle the cow.

When he got off the ATV and walked closer, the problem became clear.
A section of the four-pronged barbed wire fence had broken off. The missing
wire was nowhere to be seen, but Thomas could piece together what
happened. As he got closer to the cow, his suspicions were confirmed. She
lay on the ground, her hoof stretched awkwardly in the air to avoid cutting it
further on the wire that was wrapped around her legs.
“What mess did you get yourself into?” he asked. He spoke softly, trying
to calm the terror in the cow’s wide, brown eyes.
