“I can’t. I just can’t do it,” I whispered into my cell phone in my tiny cubicle
at my call center job from hell.
“You have to,” Aunt Jules said. “If you don’t come, you’ll look like a
spoiled brat. And while we both know that’s not true, everyone else will
assume it is.”
I stared ahead at the black computer screen in front of me. I was expected
to go to my sister’s wedding. My evil, conniving, boyfriend-stealing sister.
Did I mention the groom would be the boyfriend she stole?
I was expected to go to their wedding. During Christmas, for heaven’s
sake? Well, the day before Christmas Eve, to be exact. But I didn’t deserve
that shit. And neither did Wilbur. We wanted a quiet Christmas at home,
exactly what we had planned. And me and Wilbur didn’t derail from plans.
We stuck to them.
“Nope, I’m not going. I refuse. Besides, no one will even notice I’m not
there, especially Holly and Ben. Just like they didn’t notice me while they
were having sex behind my back for six months.”
Aunt Jules blew out a long breath. “Your mother will notice, Clover. She
thinks you’re over all of this. It’s been almost a year. It’s time to say fuck
them and put it all behind you.”
It had been a year. But who the hell ever got over that kind of betrayal?
Holly had always been a selfish bitch, but I’d almost always managed to
overlook it. She was the youngest by five years—the baby of the family—and
honestly, I’d found her selfish ways kind of cute.
But it wasn’t cute anymore. Not even a fucking little bit. Ben had been
mine for two years before she’d decided she wanted him. And Holly always
got what she wanted. In the end, she’d gotten Ben, too.
See? Selfish bitch.
Was I over the Ben part of it? Yep. But I wasn’t over the Holly bullshit
and now they were trying to ruin my damn Christmas, too. Fuck them.
“I can say fuck them and put it all behind me from here, Aunt Jules. I
don’t need to take a trip back to Sugar Mountain to see them get married to
do that,” I whisper-yelled into the phone while glancing outside the doorway
of my cubicle to make sure no one was listening.
