TALIA
“Look me in the eyes.” Galen clamped his hand on the young man’s
shoulder and reassured him that the pack would survive; that justice would be
served for the loss of the wolf’s parents. “You’re family and we take care of
our family, right?”
The boy, who looked to be about fourteen, muttered his agreement. He
didn’t seem to share Galen’s confidence, but his head full of dusty-blond
curls bobbed when he nodded in affirmation.
“Talia.” Galen called my name and waved me over.
“Coming.” I pushed the dark sunglasses up the bridge of my nose,
making certain that my eyes were hidden from view behind the dark tinted
lenses.
My eyes hadn’t changed to red outside of a shift, but I wasn’t taking any
chances. I averted my gaze from Galen’s, avoiding eye contact whenever
possible. Which was harder to do than I thought.
Sunglasses had quickly become my favorite accessory.
I faked more migraines in the short time since my eyes had first turned
than I ever had in my life. It wasn’t normal for a werewolf to have long term
ailments and Galen grew more concerned each day.
It was unfair to make him worry, considering the mysterious illness that
plagued his father, but I didn’t know what else to do.
Tell him the truth? The thought had crossed my mind on more than one
occasion and I knew I risked losing his trust if I continued to withhold
information and lie about my condition, but it was a risk I was willing to take.
At least until I had time to figure things out.
Galen would have no doubt assumed the red hue in my eyes was a side
effect of the demon mark, and I would have been inclined to agree. Except
for the nagging suspicion, a gut feeling I had since I first saw my reflection at
the lake, that it was something more.
