I ’m alive. How the fuck am I alive? Wait… I am alive, aren’t I?
My eyes are wide as I blink frantically, staring out my front
windshield in shock. My heart is pounding so hard in my chest right now
that, even though I survived nearly getting crushed by a truck, I think a heart
attack will be what takes me out.
But a beating heart is good. It means I’m alive because dead girls don’t
have heartbeats.
I slowly become aware of my surroundings, turning my head to look
around. Hissing in pain, my hand finds the back of my neck. It’s sore but not
broken, thankfully. If the only thing I leave with is a bit of whiplash, I’m
counting my blessings.
Taking my time, I test out my arms and legs, making sure everything is
working properly. Once I’m done and I confirm there’s not any real damage,
I let out a sigh of relief. I close my eyes, placing my head back against the
headrest.
The moment doesn’t last long because my mind starts to play catch up,
and in seconds, I’m remembering why I’m in my car in the first place.
“Brody,” I gasp, my eyes flying open as my heart starts to beat faster for a
whole new reason. “Shit!” I quickly move to start the car up. “Fuck yes!” I
shout when the engine roars to life.
Thankfully, the ditch I veered off into isn’t too steep, so with a little extra
pressure on the gas, I’m able to get up and back onto the road. Although, the
bumping around does nothing to help my sore neck.
With shaky hands, I try to keep myself as calm as I can as I continue
down the road toward Brody’s father’s place.
I want to go as fast as this car allows me, but the way the rain is pouring
down right now, I can’t take the risk of crashing again.
Tears fill my eyes as time ticks by. All I can think about is Brody. By the
sound of Jax’s voice, Brody isn’t taking the news well.
And I don’t expect him to. Brody got the shit end of the stick with two
parents who cared more about themselves than stepping up and doing what’s
right for their son. But at least Brody’s dad loved him. Sadly, not enough to
put the bottle down and get sober. That’s going to eat him alive.
