Prologue
Number 7, Russell Square, 1813
ANNE BUXTON, VISCOUNTESS Featherstone, readied herself to descend to her
drawing room and receive her friends.

It was a momentous occasion. She felt herself a veritable actress poised to
tread the boards, launching the theatrical sensation of the season. The ladies’
carriages had arrived and now the air in her bedchamber crackled with
anticipation.
This was her moment. It was the moment she would announce that she
had found her girl. Other of her friends had already walked that starry path of
maternal happiness. Now, it was her turn.

Meggy carefully lifted her emerald brooch from its silk-lined case and
pinned it on her dress. It was not just any emerald, it had been owned by
Catherine the Great. Lady Featherstone had won it by decisively prevailing at
one of Lord Ryland’s mystery suppers. There was some power to the gem,
she was certain, as if the tsarina’s spirit traveled with it.

Lady Featherstone stretched one hand out to receive her walking stick. It
was the very walking stick once in the hands of the famed Monsieur Vidocq,
founder of the Sûreté in Paris. That accoutrement had also been won from
Lord Ryland and she did not go anywhere without it.

Those two items were testaments to her perseverance in learning to
understand the criminal mind and unravel mysteries of all sorts. It had taken
years of work, but she had sharpened her mind to a razor’s edge.
She suspected her incisive thinking would be crucial to managing a young
lady through a London season. Especially this young lady, who came with a
mystery.

Finally, the last item she required was handed to her before she would
descend the stairs.
Tulip.
As she gazed into the soulful eyes of her spaniel, her maid somewhat
ruined the moment by muttering, “That dog needs a good scrubbing in the
tub.”
