Chapter One

The rain lashed against the windscreen. A fittingly dismal end to a dismal
day. Many thirty-two-year-olds would love the chance to have Sunday lunch
with their parents. Lia wasn’t one of them. Then again, she’d been invited not
because her parents wanted to see her, but because they thought they should.
Just as she’d gone not because she wanted to, but because they expected her
to.

That part was particularly galling, because as a child she’d made every
effort to do the opposite of what had been expected of her. Unlike her twin
sister, Grace. Funny, when people mentioned twins they pictured two people
looking identical. She and Grace couldn’t look, or be, any more different.
One of them was perfect. Blonde, elegant, the apple of her parents’ eye. Her
loves were ballet, champagne and rich, eminently suitable men.

The other was Lia. Dark haired, far less refined. A disappointment to her
parents. She played the drums, drank lager and had a track record of picking
unsuitable men.

‘What on earth?’ She stared in horror as all the dashboard warning lights
suddenly flashed on. Then off.

And the car ground to a halt.
‘Bugger, bugger, bugger.’ She slammed at the steering wheel. The dismal
day had just plummeted into downright shitty.

A turn of the key in the ignition told her what she already knew. She was
stuck. When she reached for her mobile a borderline hysterical laugh escaped
her. No charge.

Slumping back against the seat she considered her options. Sit it out and
wait for a kind driver to stop. Or walk the last two miles home in the pissing
rain. As she’d never been one to wait for things to happen to her, Lia grabbed
her handbag, thrust open the door and climbed out. Immediately the smart
brown suede boots she’d put on that morning – an attempt to look like the
daughter her parents wanted her to be – landed in a puddle. Bloody
marvellous.

She’d taken five steps when a truck pulled up ahead of her. Not just any
old truck either, but a spectacularly well-timed breakdown truck.
