Hunger and pain took turns pulling me out of my thoughts. I
attempted to escape, but that was no use. No matter how hard I struggled, I
did more damage to myself than I gained any traction in breaking free.
Everything from my wrists to my shoulders was tied back. I was bound
tighter than a nut job in the psych ward. Pressure built in the middle of my
shoulder blades the longer I lay on the wooden floor. What used to be my
childhood bedroom was now my prison cell. It wouldn’t be so bad if my
legs and arms weren’t restrained, not to mention the gag and muzzle on my
face. It was overkill even for that ornery old man.
The door opened, followed by the creaking of light footsteps. It couldn’t
be one of those idiots that followed my father’s every word. They always
walked heavily and with purpose. I turned my head, shaking it enough to
get the hair out of my eyes.
“Shit, Har,” Lorelei’s voice fluttered over to me. She moved closer, but
one of the goons followed her in and stopped her. “Fuck off. He’s my
brother. This isn’t necessary.”
“He’s killed at least five of us in the past two days. We aren’t taking any
chances.”
Lorelei rolled her eyes. “You shouldn’t be so weak. He’s wrapped up
anyway.”
“It’s for everyone’s safety and the boss’s orders.”
The mention of our father shut her up real quick. Lorelei’s shoulders
dropped along with her mouth. “Oh, I’ll try and reason with daddy later. He
didn’t need to go so extreme. He could have just talked to you. I’m sure you
would have listened.”
We both knew that was a load of shit.
I swore Lorelei lived in a different world than I did. She saw things with
rose-colored glasses. A huge pile of cow shit could be in front of her, and
she’d explain it away, making up some crap about its good for the garden.
What I would kill to have her mindset. Although, thinking about it, I’d
probably kill myself if I had to go around smiling at people I didn’t like.
“How have you been?” she asked.
