Rosie Austin shoved the garden gate open with her hip, hurried up the
path to her front door, and then stood there staring, wondering how on earth

who owned the party shop, Amanda, had tucked the weighted plastic tags
that were attached to the balloon strings into Rosie’s hands while Rosie
cradled the cake box in her arms. Determined to carry everything home in
one journey, Rosie figured it was just a matter of making sure her purchases
were balanced properly in her arms and hands before setting off. So
confident was she that things were in hand—quite literally—that she’d
refused Amanda’s offer to help carry the balloons for her.
