A disturbingly gentle thunk of metal embedding itself into wood scratches
an itch deep in my brain.
Why did I assume tonight’s dinner would be a humble, weaponless
affair? In la Cosa Nostra, the Mafia, a full family celebration always risks
turbulence. Our tight-knit bond doesn’t change that.
I sigh as I adjust my shower-damp, messy bun, and continuing to search
the pantry for vegetable stock. There are more types of cream-of-whatever
soup in here than I knew existed, and I went to culinary school. Only three
of the five of us live in the Vitali family mansion. There are enough dry and
canned goods to feed ten people for six months. It might as well be a
museum exhibit about our family’s struggles to break old habits.
The wall behind me rattles as another blade misses its mark—whatever
that is—and lands in a stud. Or so I’m guessing based on the shuddering of
the drywall and the resulting racket. I swear the dining room was dead-tothe-world quiet when I set the table three minutes ago.
Why are my brothers loitering indoors? Today is one of the handful of
times of the year we’re all under the same roof: our eldest brother’s
wedding anniversary. Why aren’t they outside on this perfect June day? It’s
seventy-five degrees with a breeze light enough that the pollen won’t put
them in choke holds while they bicker. The brother-in-law who planned this
meal sure as hell didn’t invite them to hang around or help out.
Cain and I cooking family dinners is a tradition born of mutual
frustration. He took personal offense that our family didn’t celebrate
holidays with “proper” meals. Despite my career path and my passion for
baking, my brothers loathe the idea of their sister cooking for them. They
also disliked the idea of hiring a chef for reasons that can be chalked up to
shame or embarrassment (if a Made Man could admit to feeling such
things).
I finally find a box of stock and ditch the pantry as another knife hits the
wall. Cain leans against the kitchen island, his attention on his phone and
not the pots on the stove in front of him. His blue eyes narrow in thought at
whatever he’s reading. I set the box down beside him on the island.
