Lena was getting married. Like. . . married.
Over ten minutes had passed since she’d called to tell me and I was
still unable to wrap my mind around the news. It shouldn’t have come as
such a shock to me—she and Xavier had been dating for almost two years
—but the reality that the girl I’d been best friends with since eighth grade
was going to be a wife was hard to picture. I quickly abandoned my
carefully planned study session in a very un-Ariel-like fashion because even
though I should be sticking to my study schedule if I wanted to do well on
my final tomorrow, focusing on Pharmacology was no longer possible. At
least, not until I’d processed the news with someone first.
I pulled into a parking spot in front of Connor’s apartment, relieved that I
didn’t see his roommate’s car as I walked up to the front door. I didn’t
particularly want to have this conversation with Wyatt hovering in the
background. I reached for the handle, not bothering to grab the spare key,
knowing his apartment wouldn’t be locked (because most boys were stupid
and never felt the need to lock their doors).
Okay, my family never locked our doors either, but with nine people
under one roof, it was a little pointless—there were too many people
constantly going in and out.
After letting myself into Connor’s apartment, I found him on the couch,
the light of his laptop screen reflecting off his glasses as he stared at it
intently.
I kicked off my flip-flops, plopping down on the couch next to him and
folding my legs to get comfortable as I watched him realize I was here.
“Hey, Ariel.” He closed his laptop, setting it on the coffee table. “Aren’t
you supposed to be studying?”
“Has Len not called you yet?” I asked, even though I could guess his
answer. If she had, Connor wouldn’t be surprised to see me here. But his
blank expression confirmed it. I bit my bottom lip, debating whether to tell
him. I didn’t want to spoil Lena’s big news, but Connor should’ve been one
of the first people she called. The three of us had been an inseparable trio
for over a decade.
“Well, she’ll probably be calling any second to tell you,” I said, eyeing
his phone on the couch next to him. I took a breath, mustering up all the
excitement I knew I should be feeling.
“She’s engaged!”
“Cool,” he said with an apathetic nod.
I jabbed his arm with my foot. “Did you just hear me? Our best friend is
getting married.”
A smile spread across his face, and I had a feeling it had more to do with
my reaction than Lena’s news. “Do you want me to jump up and down with
you?”
