My lungs are on fire and my breaths are sawing in and out of my chest at
an alarming rate. The air is thick with humidity and the sun is just
about to set. Not that I can see much as I sprint through the forest.
With the various Oak trees and the gorgeous Loblolly Pine canopy looming
over me, this forest is creepy as shit. But the man behind me…
My foot catches on an exposed tree root. The ground quickly rises to
meet me and I crash into it with an oomph. I swallow down the pain
splintering through my hands, knees, and right ankle. I don’t have time to
brush away the rocky debris or examine them for damage. I have to go now.
Without a second thought, I push myself up, untangle my ankle from the
dang root, and keep running. My breaths are coming out in harsh pants as I
try to regain my bearings and determine which way to go.
A twig snaps from somewhere behind me, alerting me of just how close
he is. Too close. Fork.
I turn towards the left and sprint through the wooded area; ducking and
dodging a mixture of Post Oak and Red Maple trees with low limbs that
appear to be reaching out for me. I am way too fat to be running like this.
My heart is crashing against my ribs and I’m pretty sure it’s going to pump
right out of my chest. Holy hell. I’m going to die.
Up ahead, I notice a small space beneath a trail bridge. Thank God for the
current drought. I know I need to take a break to get my heart rate under
control, and that’s the best opportunity for now.
I pump my arms as my feet carry me across the ground. Hope spurs in
my chest at the thought of hiding out for a little bit.
Just then, a painful stitch on my left side causes me to double over in
pain. Schnitzel.
“Come out, come out, wherever you are…” his deep, masked voice
taunts me; seeming to surround me on all sides. Fear shoots down my spine
and into my toes.
Knowing I need to hide, and fast, I limply jog the last few feet to the
edge of the bridge. It’s really steep on this side but the underbrush of the
forest should help hide me. Lowering my upper body a little, I start to
carefully slide my feet down the rocky slope. Just as I reach out for the
lowest beam of the bridge so I can use it to help steady myself on my way
down, a huge, meaty hand grabs around my bicep. How the hell did I not
hear him?
I scream out in terror as he yanks me toward him. Stumbling over my
feet, I’m suddenly slammed against a nearby tree; the bark cutting into my
back through my shirt. Faster than I can blink, he releases his hold on my
bicep, trapping me against the tree with his whole body. Before I can do
anything, his hand clasps around my wrist and lifts it above my head;
pinning it to the tree
