From the Ashes
ELLA
An unsettling quiet wraps around me as I watch the last few embers of
fire fade, like stars winking out at the end of a long night.
Staring into the ashes, I can’t help but wonder…
How much longer can this go on?
Where I once saw the cozy haven that was my new home, only charred
remains clutch at the dark. The firetrucks are long gone, and the chaos has
settled into an eerie calm.
Yet, disbelief gnaws at me, refusing to let go.
I stand here, heart heavy with loss and burning with anger, under the
indifferent light of a crescent moon—so starkly different from the fiery
inferno that consumed my home hours ago.
In the distance, the soft howls of my pack blend with the night, a
mournful echo of our shared grief. Part of me yearns to join them, to share
in their lament, but I can’t afford tears now.
No shrinking back.
Not when Troy, my ex-turned-foe and soon werewolf, is out there
plotting with Andres—the Alpha brazen enough to threaten everything I
hold dear. He dared to target my children and nearly succeeded, if not for
Alanna and her mysterious, destructive powers.
And as if my plate isn’t full enough, a weighty prophecy looms over
Stone and me, clouding my thoughts.
I need clarity.
I need a plan.
Feeling lost, as if caught in someone else’s dark tale, I barely register
Stone’s presence until his hand rests reassuringly on my back. Silent and
strong, he’s always there when I need him most, reminding me we’re in this
together, come what may.
“We’ll rebuild,” I whisper, trying to convince myself as much as him.
“Not just the house, but… everything. I won’t let Andres think he’s rattled
us. The pack”—I sigh—“I’ll protect the pack. Somehow.”
“I know,” Stone replies, his voice firm as resolve bleeds into his words.
His hands press against my shoulders as he twists me to face him. “Andres
won’t know what hit him. But in the meantime, you need to rest.” I open
my mouth to say I have no home to rest in, but he beats me to it when he
continues, “You and the kids are staying with me.”
I glance into his emerald eyes and they flare, daring me to defy him.
There’s no room for argument there. I get it.
I might be Alpha, but it’s not like we have anywhere else to go.
Yet my stomach still flips at the idea of staying with him because I
know where that puts me.
In his bed.
We’ve gotten so close—but not that close. Not yet.
And I still don’t have a good reason why.
So, the idea that this might finally put us on a collision course…
Instead of sinking into the strangely giddy feeling that threatens to play
at my heart and definitely my body, I simply nod in silent agreement.
My gaze extends past Stone to Asher. For tonight, he’s being the
protective older brother, as he stands close to Avery with his arm around her
shoulders.
