Mercedes
Providence, Rhode Island
2024
Today is the day.
It’s now or never.
I take a deep, fortifying breath and step into the elevator after someone
who is quite arguably the most attractive man in all of Rhode Island. Tall
and lean with a mop of curls, perfect teeth, and a better sense of style than
I’ve ever had. He nods at me, and I nearly lose my nerve.

The smile I flash him is meant to be warm and welcoming, but
considering how nervous I am, I’m sure it appears pained, because he
quickly looks away. I turn so, like him, I’m facing the elevator door and
remind myself if I don’t shoot my shot there’s a one hundred percent
certainty he’ll never notice me.

Twenty-three rides in the elevator together. Eight with several other
tenants. Six with one other person. Nine with just me. Zero interaction other
than a nod in greeting.

I’ve watched him since he moved in. Okay, that sounds bad. It’s not like
I stalk him or anything like that. I moved to Providence right before the
pandemic and work from home, so suffice it to say, I don’t have a busy
social calendar. Yes, the world has reopened, and a lot of people have gone
back to what some might call normal, but I didn’t start out as much of an
extrovert and will admit that having an excuse to stay home alone was a
relief for a long time.

If I wanted to see no one and do nothing, though, I could have stayed on
Block Island. Except for the summer, it’s a pretty quiet place. Even quieter,
for me, after my parents moved south for the warmer weather right after I
graduated from college.

It took a while for me to find the courage to relocate on my own, but
moving to Providence to meet people just before the world closed down
was what I would call classic Mercedes timing.
But my luck is about to change.

I’m taking charge of my life and my happiness.
I gulp in air as the door to the elevator closes. He lives on the fourth
floor, which means I don’t have much time to do this. “Hi, I’m Mercedes,” I
say breathlessly.
