LONDON, MAY 1835
Phoebe Beaumont had no interest in marriage.
She reminded herself of this fact every so often, such as when
she attended balls as the companion of her dear cousin Catherine
who, by contrast, had every interest in marriage. When Phoebe was asked
by gentlemen to dance, she always declined, even if they were handsome
and even if she might have enjoyed it. She didn’t want to catch a husband,
and it was her goal at all society events to ensure she never gave off the
impression that she did.

She had been successful in her endeavors and, at the still-ripe age of
two and twenty, was widely considered a wallflower on her way to
becoming a proper spinster.

Catherine, unfortunately, still seemed to need constant reminders that
Phoebe had no interest in marriage. She needed one right now, in fact, as
they stood together outside of the library where Phoebe had just secured the
latest gothic romance novel from her favorite author.
I’ll write like this someday, Phoebe promised herself, running her finger
along the book’s perfect binding. Someday, my name will be printed inside
of a book just like this.

“I’m simply saying that I don’t understand how you can read those
stories and claim you have no wish to find love in your own life,” Catherine
declared, wrinkling her pert nose at the small volume clutched in Phoebe’s
hands. “You read about romance all day and yet refuse to entertain the idea
of it happening to you. It’s hypocritical.”

“Hypocritical, really?” Phoebe had learned long ago that the most
efficient way to end this conversation with her cousin was to engage with
her as little as possible, but she had a hard time employing this in practice.
Catherine always knew the right buttons to push. “Just because I enjoy
reading about something doesn’t mean I want to live it. You enjoyed that
treatise on ancient Greece. Do you wish to go back in time and live there?”
Catherine chuckled low. “I’m not saying I wouldn’t. That treatise was so
naughty, I cannot believe Mama let me read it.”

“I’m sure she did not know.”
“I’m sure she did not.” She raised her brows in an expression of mockseriousness. “We should have it removed from the house, so she doesn’t
accidentally read it and faint herself to death.”
Phoebe tried to hide a grin. “You’re terrible.”

“But you know I’m right. What was I saying? Oh, yes. I’ve tried reading
those books you love, but they put me in a haze, and all I can do is
daydream. Don’t they make you want a husband?”

“You know I only read them for research purposes,” Phoebe replied.
Except this was not true at all. She enjoyed romance novels, so much so
that it was her lifelong dream to write one of her own, and it had been ever
since she had discovered Jane Austen’s Emma on her aunt’s bookshelf. “I
need to read what is popular if I’m going to be a published novelist
someday. Readers love romance.”
