The scent of fire and brimstone permeated the air, seeping through my
nostrils as I struggled to open my eyes. The memories of each event
leading up to this moment—the battle, the deaths, Ryken—flashed
through my mind, all while the strange, echoing, musical voice spoke. Wake
up. Save them.
I had saved them—Redmond, Eulalia, Fin, Ryken—from him, but I
hadn’t saved the right ones, not according to the disembodied voice. I
scrubbed a hand down my face, sweeping away the godawful stench of
sulfur that had seeped into my nostrils, a scent I had never once smelled in
Faerie.
The thought forced my eyes open as panic thrummed through my bones.
My gaze frantically searched my surroundings, tracing from the stone
ceiling above me to the obsidian floors below. Candles flickered along
damp earthen walls, revealing a wide framed window that overlooked a
shadowy night sky. I scrubbed my eyes and squinted, shaking my head at
the sight that lay outside. Two moons hung low in the sky, one deep maroon
and the other silvery white.
“Oh no,” I muttered to myself, digging the tips of my fingers into the
gritty stone floor. I’d been here once before—a world that was not my own.
The Otherworld.
My body tinged with pain as I pushed up and ventured toward the large
window. A loud squawk sounded to my right, and I jumped at the noise, a
large, shadowed bird—a shadow creature—appearing. My body froze as I
met its flaming, blood-red eyes. Shadow creatures were foretold to be
murderous, unstoppable, and indomitable, but it simply tilted its head and
continued to preen the misty shadows that crowded its form.
With a shrug, I turned my back to it, pressing my face to the window
and scanning my surroundings. A gasp caught in my throat.
What lay outside the window seemed far more formidable than the bird.
I was miles above the ground, trapped inside a castle with barred
windows and iron framework. My head swiveled as I searched for any
noticeable sign of escape, but there was nothing to be found.
This castle was a prison.
Pain tugged at my back, calling for my attention, and I crooked my neck
to meet the sight of feathery golden wings. In all the chaos, I’d nearly
forgotten I had transformed into something other.
A luminary.
Memories flooded my mind of Malachi killing my loved ones, and the
following pain fueled transformation that resulted in their resurrection.
Afterwards, a disembodied voice called to me, transporting me to a vision
of where the luminaries lay. They were seemingly dead, cast in stone, and
even their leader, Solaris—my father, called for my aide.
It had been too much to handle, the power and subsequent draining of it.
I must have passed out once Ryken’s heartbeat finally returned.
Malachi must have stolen me away while my mate still lay unconscious.
I shook my head as I gazed out the window overlooking the Otherworld.
