Ev
THE Mission: Impossible theme was not the earworm Ev needed right now.
He flicked his tongue against the base of his labret piercing, then caught it
between his teeth to keep himself from humming. The windows were all
dark, as he’d known they would be. His target was predictable like that. Ev
crept up the driveway, sticking to the shadowed edge. There was no moon
tonight, and the streetlights were few and far between. Even if someone
were to look, he would be nearly invisible in his dark clothes and knit hat.
That was the hope anyway. It would be no good if he got caught before he
enacted his revenge.

“Dun dun dah-dah, dun dun dah-dah,” he sang under his breath as he
ducked behind the trash cans. “Do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do.” Checking his
surroundings one last time, he darted across the driveway to the keypad that
controlled the garage door. This was the tricky part. He input the code,
tensing as the motor cut on with a deep rattle and the door began to rise. His
target’s bedroom was on the far side of the house, so chances were good he
wouldn’t hear anything, but if he did, Ev was screwed.

When the door stopped, Ev held his breath, ears straining for any sign he
was about to be caught. Seconds ticked by, but he heard nothing. He let out
his breath, then slipped into the dark garage. His heart was in his throat, the
beat of it throbbing against his windpipe. He swallowed it down. The hard
part was done. It only took a moment to drop his backpack to the ground
and retrieve his supplies. He didn’t even have to worry about fingerprints.
He’d been in both the garage and the car often enough over the last ten
months that any evidence could easily be explained away.

He opened the car door and slid into the driver’s seat. With his piercing
caught between his teeth again, he oh-so carefully unscrewed the jar
containing his revenge. He couldn’t help a giggle as he tilted it and almost a
pound of glitter poured down into the car’s air vents. His ex-daddy was
going to be in for a sparkly pink surprise in the morning. Ev only wished he
could be there to see it. Taking a moment, he set all the vents to point
toward the driver’s seat, then adjusted the air to high. The next person who
turned on the car would be directly in the line of fire.

Now, for the second part of his plan. He reached down and popped the
trunk. If his ex-daddy had been only his ex, Ev probably would have
stopped at the glitter. But no. The man was also his ex-boss. Cheating on Ev
had been bad enough, but then, when Ev had found out and dumped him,
the asshole had gone and fired him as well. He said it was because Ev
couldn’t keep their personal and professional lives separate. As if Jason
didn’t deserve to be cussed out in the middle of the break room.
