“Did she smile?” I glance at my sister.
As the days go on, I’m forgetting her. I’m forgetting her smell, her voice,
the way she would wake me up in the morning. I’m forgetting my mother.
“Every time she was with us.” My sister tells me, and I look at the
picture of us sitting on the couch together.
It’s the only picture I have left of my mom, and I hide it from my dad
because he doesn’t let us have pictures of her.
“She loved us.” She quickly tells me to be quiet when we hear Dad
outside the bedroom.
As a new year begins—it’s time to have some fun again.
The summer break has never been anything special. I’m not a fan. It
brings back too many bad memories, memories I would rather forget but
can’t, no matter how hard I try.
No one likes reminders of a time which causes so much guilt or adds
another question to the ones already there. But yet that’s where I live every
day. I try to put it at the back of my mind, but it’s still there. Something
always reminds me of how I should’ve been there and how I let them down.
The past haunts you.
I don’t know why, but this year, I’ve wanted to get out of town and be
somewhere that doesn’t remind me of the past. So, we’ve picked a random
place to spend some of the summer, and Miami was the winner.
A summer of partying, which involves drinking and having fun with
women…who wouldn’t want in.
However, Blake and Logan are now both ‘one woman men,’ and they
are lucky because their girls are great. Blake’s girl, August, has spent the
summer with her dad. And Logan’s girl, Meadow, has gone away with her
mom and sister. So, having half the summer with nothing to do, why not
enjoy it somewhere else?
Besides, it was nice to have a guy’s trip. We don’t spend time without
the girls anymore. August and Meadow live with us, and we all go to the
same college, so the five of us are always together. I don’t mind because
Meadow and August know when we need our own time to talk or need
space, and they don’t complain about it.
But summer is done. Now it’s back to business. Study and hockey are
the focus. We need to make sure we win the hockey championship again.
Last year…easy win. It’s like the other teams couldn’t understand the
concept of ‘trying to win.’ But the biggest job this year will be finally
putting my dad where he belongs. Six feet down in the ground.
Beyonce’s newest song blasts in my bedroom while I lay in bed, staring
at the ceiling, trying to forget about everything going through my head.
I should be out there partying with my friends, yet I want to shut the
world out and be alone for now. Besides, I’m feeling tired from all the party
prep. Hiring a new DJ for the house parties this year has taken time.
