Drew
It’s good to be home.
I sighed as I parked my bus at the edge of the parking lot of M’s Place, a
tiny little hole-in the wall bar in the small town of Jasper Springs.
It’d been nearly twenty years since I left the quaint place, after scoring my
first big time record deal. Though it was home, it didn’t feel like home
anymore, not without my parents who no longer lived here, or with the new
buildings and shops that replaced the old ones I once remembered.
I sat for a moment and appreciated the view of the sunset behind the trees,
the way the light kissed the pavement, glinting off the metal of my Axe 2
Grind lanyard hanging in the window.

While my bandmates and I were on hiatus so we could focus on our solo
projects, I was excited at the idea of traveling to more local spots to perform
instead of the bigger venues the band normally played at. Which meant I’d
be taking the bus across the country to hit all the little dives, diners, and
practically dungeons in my path from LA to Pittsburgh.
The fresh air and change of scenery would be good for me, or so I told
myself.

Though perhaps it wasn’t just a need for a change of scenery that had me
chomping at the bit, ready to jump on a bus by myself and head for the
hills. If I was being honest, it might have had something to do with
America’s Sexiest Man Alive, Rozen Lane. My cheating bastard of an exboyfriend.
“You gonna just sit there like a fucking lump, Axel, or are you gonna get
yourself checked in?” The grumble of my long-time friend and manager,
Helena “Howler” Dryfuss bit as she stopped just behind the driver seat.

I sighed, flipping the key to turn the engine off, then turning in my chair to
look at her. Okay, maybe I wasn’t taking this trip just by myself. Howler
would be with me no matter where I went, like a bad case of poison ivy.
“Can I just have a minute, Howler? Christ, I haven’t been home in like, a
lifetime. Maybe I just want to, you know, process shit?” I growled.
Helena shot me a scathing look, her bright blue eyes full of disdain and
annoyance.

“You had sixteen hours to process, baby. Therapy time is over. Now get
your ass in gear, and let’s get set up. The show must go on.”
I dropped my hand from the steering wheel, letting out a sigh as the door
opened, deciding perhaps Helena was right.

Sitting in my bus moping was not doing me any favors at the moment, and
if there was one thing that I was capable of doing that would take my mind
off Rozen, it was performing. So, I grabbed my white electric guitar from
the couch in front of the door, flashing Helena a bright, white-toothed smile
as I cocked my head, shedding my inner homeboy and channeling the man
people paid to see. The man I’d been for the last twenty years.
“Right, of course.”
