TWO AND A HALF MONTHS LATER…
WAS THIS MY LIFE? I asked for the fifth time in the last ten minutes. The
contentment that swelled in my chest wasn’t to be taken lightly. After so
many years of hurt, pain, and unhappiness, things for me were finally
falling into place.

My jaws hurt from the excessive smiling I’d done over the hour. I could
hardly believe that I was getting my happily ever after. Though I knew it
was obtainable, I knew that I couldn’t make it happen alone. I needed a
partner to make my dreams come true and there he was, standing just a few
feet away from me with his hands shoved into the pockets of his slacks. His
piercing gaze only made my lips rise further and my cheeks burn with glee.
‘I love you,’ he mouthed, causing my center to throb.

‘I love you back,’ I mouthed.
My line of vision shifted as my head fell, and my emotions lumped in
my chest. We were really doing this. I was really doing this. A wife. I’d be a
wife soon. I’d waited patiently for my turn, and I was up next. This was a
title I’d wanted to wear since I could remember. Before I even fully
understood the role, requirements, and reality of being a wife, I wanted the

large diamond in the middle glistened along with my eyes. My moment had
come and it was a glorious one, one that I couldn’t wait to tell my children
and grandchildren.

“Awwwwww. Poor baby,” Ditto teased, scooting her chair closer.
Though six years my junior, she was much more like a sibling than my
cousin. We hadn’t exactly grown up together but as we got older, we got so
much closer. She and I were almost identical in spirits, ambition, energy,
and self-awareness. However, we were so much different from one another,
physically. While my skin was dark like chocolate candy, hers was closest
to the color yellow. My hair was full of thick, fluffy kinks and coils while
she rocked thick, fluffy spirals.

Ditto had left Channing for a while to pursue her college education and
ended up staying a bit longer than she intended. She returned to Channing
with, not only a bachelor’s degree, but a master’s as well. She specialized in
product development and was helping me bring my ideas for my herbal tea
line to life

She preferred coffee. I guess that was another thing we didn’t share,
interest in coffee. Though I served hundreds of dollars a day worth of coffee
at Baisleigh’s House on a daily basis, it wasn’t the best beverage in my
opinion. It was never very pleasant to my body.

I’d consumed it for as long as I had because I didn’t think there were
any other alternatives. After digging a bit deeper, I discovered herbal teas
