Rage.
Misery.
Loneliness.
Grief.
Heartache.
He ran down the list of what had sort of become a personal mantra
for him. Five emotions to match the things he’d felt these past three years—
like his own version of the five stages of grief.
His skin felt like it was buzzing, a mixture of all of the above filling
him up to the point he thought he was about to explode. The camera in the
corner, with its tiny red flashing light showing it was recording, helped
calm him some, but only just. Something about creating physical evidence,
a tangible thing he could turn to later once he left this place and returned to
his regularly scheduled program, helped ease some of the turmoil in his gut.
Was it strange to be soothed by an illegally made sex tape?
Sure.
But murder was also illegal, and if the man currently writhing on the
floor at his feet was any indicator, getting away with crime on this planet
was a piece of cake.
Aneski brought the end of the cigarette to his lips and took a deep
drag, hoping the burrow-grass inside would steady his nerves further,
enough so he could get this show on the damn road.
How long had he been standing there? Watching?
Five minutes?
Ten?
If he was to count every moment from the beginning when he’d first
dragged the man in here, it’d been a total of two weeks.
Two weeks and the blond had yet to break.
Aneski would expect nothing less from the infamous Flix Fulmini.
But enough was enough. No matter how much he enjoyed watching.
It was only a matter of time before Flix’s mafia members realized he wasn’t
on the supposed vacation Aneski had made them believe and came looking
for him. He’d covered his tracks, but the Brumal were in a whole other
league; they’d find them eventually, and when they did, Aneski would lose
his chance.
He crouched, trailing his gaze down Flix’s muscular back, watching
as the other man strained against the chains despite knowing already there
was no use.
In the weeks he’d been here, Aneski had been kind enough to
readjust them now and again. Twice a day, they flooded this room with
knockout gas then came in and unhooked him. The stuff wasn’t too potent,
so he woke within ten minutes and was allowed to move into the bathroom
to do his business and shower. Rexton typically oversaw that since Aneski
couldn’t justify being here twenty-four-seven.
But he sometimes watched the footage after, just to be sure Flix
wasn’t up to anything funny that Rex might miss. Any in-person
questioning was typically done by Rexton as well, since the shitty voice
modulator they’d purchased broke after one use.
He could manage this, though, and not just because he loathed the
idea of anyone else getting to see the Brumal Runner this way.
“For my eyes only,” Aneski whispered to himself, snorting over his
own stupid joke.
