Wheat Ridge, Colorado – 1880
The clouds moved quickly in the sky above as the wind whipped
around Anna. But still, she stood. The funeral goers had long since
disappeared, escorted by Josie back to the Smith Ranch so that they could
continue their vigil for her father. Anna, however, could not bring herself to
move.
Milo let out a soft whine from where he sat at her feet, the sound
matching the deep melancholy that his owner felt in her soul. And still,
Anna stood. It felt like all she could do. To stand and to look at the open
grave before her, the one that bore the casket that her father rested in.
For days she had been warring with the facts of what had happened,
waking up each morning forgetting for a peaceful, split second that her
father was gone, only for her heart to plummet when she relived it all over
again. She felt like she had not stopped crying for three days straight. But
now, standing beside his grave, she had not a single tear left in her. Her eyes
and her soul felt empty in a way that Anna had never before experienced.
“You were my very best friend,” she whispered to her father,
praying that the wind that stirred her hair and brushed her cheek would
carry her words with it to heaven, so that he might hear them. “You were
the best man that I have ever known. The best man that I will ever know.
And I will love you until my body withers to dust, and I have joined you
and momma in heaven.”
A clap of thunder echoed through the air, as if God himself heard
her promise. And still, Anna stood. Milo, for what it was worth, did not
move an inch from her side. The puppy, who somehow had grown even
more attached to Anna over the last few days, sat still at her feet, looking up
at her with love-filled eyes, letting out soft whines to let her know that he
was still there. Her own small sentinel, holding vigil with her for as long as
she required.
When the rain began to fall, pelting Anna’s cheeks and streaking
across her gown, the cold of it finally broke through her melancholy haze.
She shook her head, bringing her thoughts back to the present and away
from the reel of memories spooling out in her mind ever since her father
had died.
“What do you say, Milo?” she asked, turning her gaze toward the
puppy at her feet. “Are you ready to go back to the house and deal with all
of them?”
The dog cocked his head at her, turning it this way and that as he
tried to make sense of her words. His overlarge ears flapped from side to
side with his movements, and she couldn’t help it; a small, tentative chuckle
pushing itself up from somewhere deep within Anna’s chest. The sound
came out raspy and foreign.
