Present day
“Thanks for sharing the ride from the airport with me, bro.”
Jasper sighed. His friend Hudson was a god on the drums. Fun.
Thoughtful—the only man he knew who kept track of friend’s birthdays.
But he could also, occasionally, be as dumb as a box of staples. “It was
the airport shuttle. For our hotel. Same as this vaporetto.”
Hudson smiled and shrugged like any other time he got caught with his
brain down around his ankles. “Still good to spend time with you. Weird
having a whole month off without seeing the rest of the band.”
Jasper agreed. In theory. He missed performing, of course. Generally
missed hanging with people who were now as much appendages to him as a
third arm.

And he really, really missed Cady.
But the time away from the band had given him some much-needed
clarity.

The powerboat thunked up and down across the canal to bop into the
rubber bumpers at the hotel’s private dock. Jasper couldn’t wait for his
friend. He clambered up the steps and through the wrought iron gate to turn
back for a wide view of the Grand Canal.

It was a freaking postcard of a view. The blue water of the canal rippled
under the bright Italian sun. Across it were white, red, and cream buildings,
all with rows of windows shaped like they should be in a church. White
stone gargoyle heads bracketed the path, along with a pair of palm trees.
Hudson stamped his feet wide on the grass, swaying from side to side.

“Gotta get my sea legs!”
“Too late for that, buddy. Aim for your land legs. You’ve been an ace at
using ’em for thirty years. I think you’ll be okay in a sec.” Hudson’s heart
—and enthusiasm—was five times bigger than his brain. Shocking that a
pigeon hadn’t mugged him in Manhattan last week.

They were actually in Venice. The real thing, this time.
This semi-college reunion wedding should be far more of a reality than
the shit-show that’d been Hudson’s Vegas train wreck nuptials. As soon as
the bride found out their honeymoon was on Hudson’s dime in New
Orleans and not an all-expenses-paid trip to a tropical resort on Dad’s
lottery cash? She’d pitched an epic fit and dumped his ass before they’d
emptied the all-you-can-eat oysters at the next day’s brunch buffet.

But that was eight years’ worth of water under the bridge. Their whole
group was older and—aside from Hudson—at least a bit wiser. Their band
was a going success…if you defined success as loosely as the stretched-out
neck of a T-shirt. Gordy, the groom, had hired them to play the wedding.
He’d get to see Cady in a fancy, tight dress with her hair piled up,
revealing her neck…

When Jasper turned around, there she was, as if he’d thought her into
existence. Blonde hair in a typically messy ponytail. Cady still wore her
airplane uniform of yoga pants and UCSB sweatshirt with the arms hacked
off.
