BELLE
14 YEARS OLD
I
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
The muffled groans get louder as I approach the ring. In the dim light of
the only light bulb in the room, stands my brother, breathing fast and
jumping with excitement in the big square box that I’ve come to know so
well by now. All over his defined body oozes the fresh blood that I already
know doesn’t belong to him, but his opponent’s.

Whenever I come here to watch him, I can see how his face changes with
every punch, every hit, every win. He is more powerful, more dangerous
than ever. He is what I am dreaming of becoming. His blonde hair now has
new patches of red, gained after the merciless fight with Ex.
This game we play, this is our escape. Brian is not happy with the slow,
almost insignificant progress our club has made over the past years. We are
only a few people, without many connections, a club of outcast strays, as
the police like to call us, and it stuck.

‘The Strays’ are driven by impulse; my brother and his friends try to keep
us safe from danger. This part of the district we live in can get a man killed
in no time, but together we can conquer all.

Centuries ago, during the catastrophic great quake claiming millions of
lives, one of the ancient continents split apart, leaving this solitary landmass
adrift in the ocean. While we refer to it as home, it is known as Escador. It
emerged as Earth’s eighth continent, designated by every surviving state
post-catastrophe as the destination for all criminals, regardless of race or
gender. Murderers, thieves, rapists from all around the globe converged
here, forced to survive on the little resources they had.

As it always happens, some people had far greater influence than the rest,
and they were able to smuggle all kinds of resources on Escador with the
help of corrupted politicians and police forces from Europe, Old America
and Asia. With time, people had jobs and businesses. But not all were
worthy and capable, so the rest remained poor, just as they had arrived,
forced to take everything in their own hands.

That is how the districts were created, cities ranked by economy, social
status, and labor power. As those criminals made sure to carry on the
bloodline, extinction is unlikely to happen on Escador, but in our district,
Annex, well that’s another story.
We were not lucky enough to be born and raised in a place where we
could enjoy the love of a mother, the warmth of a hot soup or the stability
given by a job.

We do have hunters, men and women who are designated to take the few
animals, medicine and resources other districts drop in the woods that
connect Annex to our rival district, Peche. Or self-made fighters like my
brother who go out on missions, infiltrating other districts to procure
whatever resources they can, ensuring our survival.

We also have the old buildings, the ones left standing after the quake, that
the generations before us fixed, same as cars and other basics that feel
priceless to us.
