In the Camp
Violet
Blood stains my hands a bright crimson, coating the front of my
dress and pooling in a thick puddle at my feet. Screams of the
dead and dying rise to accompany the backdrop, echoing in my
ears long after I would step off the battlefield at night.
I wasn’t aware if the fighting continued, only of the endless stream of
soldiers being brought to me for healing.
I dive deep into my magic, slicing it into tiny pieces to heal one after
another after another until I grow unsteady on my feet and their
pained faces all blur together.
“Your Highness, you must stop soon. You’ve extended yourself too
far,” Vera says from beside me.
Blood coats her clothes, and sweat pours from her as she works.
I ignore my advisor, reaching for the next patient despite the black
edge taking over my vision.
“Your Highness! I must insist you stop,” Vera says again.
I feel her cool fingers on my shoulder as she turns me to face her.
“Violet, I told you I’d only allow you to come again this month if you
promised not to empty your magic reserve this time,” she urges.
She has a point. I had promised, but I didn’t know what I was walking
into then. Didn’t know the sheer magnitude of soldiers that would
need us after the most recent battle.
“I know Vera, I’m sorry,” I answer. “I’ll go back to the campsite and
rest for a few hours, then be back.”
The concession felt like a betrayal to the entire field of soldiers in
need of healing, but I struggled even to make it to my tent before
collapsing on the ground. I said a quick prayer to Freya for healing
and health for the soldiers outside.
I don’t bother changing, don’t even bother to wash the blood from my
hands before falling into a deep sleep.
It is the screams that pull me from my slumber, screams different
than before – not ones of pain, but terror. The screams echo around
me, mixing with the staccato shout of orders. Sitting up, I am
instantly greeted by the acrid smell of smoke in the air.
What the hell is happening?
Vera appears in the entry to my tent, worry etched deep into her
face.
“Violet! We have to go!” she says.
Something about the tone of voice helps to shake off the rest of the
slumber as I jump to my feet and step into utter hell. People run in
every direction as flaming tents light up the night sky. We are under
attack.
Vera draws a sword with one arm, as she drags me dumbfounded
behind her with the other.
This couldn’t be happening. What kind of people attack a camp of
injured soldiers?
