Cora fumbled with the small sphere in her fingers, her hands full of travel
documents, cell phone, and wallet. The sound of her tennis shoes squeaking
with every step across the airport floor pinged in her ears. Irritation boiled
in her chest, but she forced it down with a breath.
Her phone chimed with a “failed connection” banner as the AirTag in
her hand remained unpaired.

“Kenny, you’re trying to kill me,” Cora mumbled as she restarted the
connection process for what felt like the hundredth time.
In her thirty years of life, Cora had never warmed to technology the
same way her peers had. No one would consider her techy. She had no
social media accounts, which was ironic since they were the whole of her
career. And now, thanks to her trendy and overzealous best friend, she was
in a fight with an unnecessary tracking device.

Kenny had sworn she would fall in love with the technology, crediting
her love for data. He assured her it would be easy to follow the precise
location of her luggage throughout the traveling process. Cora had to admit
the idea was enticing.

She resented the anticipation.
The airport bustled with people. Cora walked quickly toward the airline
check-in line. While she had plenty of time before her flight’s departure, she
knew the only way to relieve the gnawing, anxious feeling in the back of
her mind was to sit at her gate with a warm cup of coffee in her hand.
So much of the traveling process was unpredictable. So much of it was
in the hands of others. It was one of the things Cora hated the most. When
things went wrong—and they were bound to go wrong—there was often
nothing she could do about it.

Just like now as she continued to struggle with the pairing process of
connecting her phone and AirTag. If she could just get it to work, at least
then, she would know the location of her belongings when—not if—they
went missing.

Cora’s quick steps came to a complete stop. The sudden impact caused
her to involuntarily grunt as she collided full force into someone’s broad
chest. Jostled by the force and surprise, her belongings scattered on the
airport floor.

Taking a step back, she gathered a calming breath. If this was how the
trip started, it did not bode well for the rest of the weekend. An image of her
quaint studio apartment flashed in her mind. She longed for the comfort and
familiarity she knew she would find there.

“Sorry.” The man’s steady voice trickled like he was trying to
impersonate Sherlock Holmes. “I didn’t see you there.”

“Clearly.” Cora bent down and tried to make quick work of gathering
her things. She collected her cell phone and began scooping up her papers.
While her travel itinerary was created electronically, she only trusted
tangible documents to keep her on track.
