Neville Astley, fifteenth Viscount Wilton, hated most people.
While he abhorred social gatherings of every sort, no
abomination was quite as hideously wretched to endure as the
country house party. To him, country house parties were the equivalent of
walking barefoot through the wilds of Scotland in the coldest depths of
winter. He’d rather subject himself to any other form of torture. But for his
elder brother’s only daughter, he would do anything, even if it meant
playing life-sized lawn chess in Yorkshire or being chased by an irate swan.
Even if it meant listening to dreadful singing and playing companion to a
potted palm during a ball.
Even if it meant inadvertently catching Lady Charity Manners
swimming in nothing but her chemise during his customary early-morning
walk.
He hadn’t intended to linger when he first heard the rhythmic sound of
water splashing. Nor when he’d discovered the tidy heap of feminine
garments that suggested whoever was swimming was not just a lady, but
also one who was wearing shockingly little.
She wasn’t completely naked as she emerged from the sparkling
Sherborne Manor lake just now, the chemise plastered lovingly over the
contours of her well-curved form. But she may as well have been. Before
him stood the most compelling evidence that the rumor about the
scandalous nude Venus painting was true. Because she looked every bit as
glorious and beautiful as the picture he’d seen on display at the Grosvenor
Gallery.
She had posed for it.
He was certain.
The knowledge was astonishing. He couldn’t fathom the daring she
must possess. Not just to sit naked for the painting’s lurid depiction of the
goddess, but to swim at a house party wearing a garment that was
essentially transparent.
Neville was horrified. He was also—and quite against his better
judgment—moved. Every part of her was perfectly formed, a temptation he
couldn’t seem to stop devouring with his gaze, even though the gentleman
in him knew he ought to look away.
“Lord Wilton,” she said brightly, as if they had met under ordinary
circumstances and he couldn’t see her nipples through that wet scrap of
linen. “You’re taking your morning walk early today.”
He was, by half an hour.
How the devil did she know? More importantly, why was she not
making any move to cover herself?
“You ought to dress, Lady Charity,” he said stiffly. “For the sake of your
modesty.”
Where was her chaperone? She had come to the house party with her
aunt, Lady Louise Manners. The woman clearly had no notion what manner
of mischief her charge was making. Either way, Lady Charity was fortunate
that it was Neville who had happened upon her and not one of the other
guests.
