“I can’t believe you convinced your dad to let you come!”
my best friend and sister from another mister, Charli,
says, dancing in the passenger seat beside me. I shake my
head, laughing.
“I had to pay my sister to help us out. She’s amazing with
Photoshop, so we will make it look like we are doing a work
exchange program in Toronto or something,
” I explain with
a wink.

“Ugh, a whole month of nothing but the beach. I am so
excited!” she says, hanging her feet out my car window.
I cannot wait. I have always loved the beach, and at
nineteen, this will be the first time my overly strict dad has
let me go this far without him. You would think going off to
college would have cured him of some of the overprotectiveness, but I swear this last year only made him
worse. My freshman year at UGA was eye-opening and such
a blessing. Not only did I have my best friend by my side, but
I got my first breath of fresh air in what felt like years. Fine,
not literally, but it was the first time in as long as I could
remember that I could breathe without the weight of my
dad’s expectations pressing on me.

That’s why getting away
for at least part of the summer is so important to me. I don’t
know if I can handle an entire summer back home again.
I’m so lost in thought that I jump when Charli smacks me
on the arm. “Ouch, hoe! What was that for?” I ask, rubbing
my arm.

“Did you hear anything I said?” she asks, pushing her
sunglasses into her hairline.
“Sorry, no. I’m just thinking about my dad and how he’ll
worry if he finds out,” I say, feeling guilty and then annoyed
at myself for the guilt.

My mom left my dad alone with my sister and me when I
was six. She left town with her then-boss, and we haven’t
heard from her since. My dad didn’t skip a beat, though. He
was there through everything. Nightmares, dance recitals,
periods… you name it, and he was always there when we
turned around.

He was strict, over-protective, and more than
a little overbearing, but I did everything I could to make life
easier for him when I was growing up. I got straight A’s,
never stayed out past curfew, and never caused waves. He
isn’t a bad guy and was a great dad, but I never wanted to
draw more attention than I had to.

He had enough to worry
about already without me adding any additional stress.
This trip is my chance to live a little outside of the stress
of school and away from the pressures of being my dad’s
perfect little child. With Charli by my side, I know it will be
one hell of a ride.
