I STAND AGAINST THE WALL, nursing the drink in my
hand. I really don’t want to be here. Hell, I’d rather be anywhere but here. I
have no choice; it’s the office Christmas party and I was informed that I
needed to be here. Despite being alone for the holidays thanks to my useless
ex-boyfriend, who I found out just a week ago was cheating on me. I’m now
plastering on a cheerful smile and pretending to be enjoying the festivities
whereas I’d rather be at home, curled up in my comfy pajamas with a bottle
of wine and a romcom movie to keep me company.
“What are you doing hiding?” Derek Jones questions with a raised brow
as he comes to stand in front of me.
Ah, the man of the hour. My boss. My hot, sexy, older boss who’s sexier
than a Greek God. ’The man that has starred in my fantasies since I was a
teenager. He’s my best friend’s dad.
“I don’t like people,” I say. “Something that you know all too well. But
you insisted that I be here, you never said that I had to enjoy it.”
His lips twitch. “Always were the grinch,” he says with a smirk.
I stick my tongue out at him, I’m still childish, despite being twentyfour. I can’t help it, being around Derek makes me rebellious.
“But seriously, Cherry, are you going to stand in the corner all night and
glare at anyone who comes near you?” His gaze is soft as he watches me.
“What’s going on? You’ve not been yourself the past week or so.”
“Dunno what you mean,” I reply, glancing around the room. Derek has
known me for well over aa decade now. The man can tell when I’m lying.
His fingers go to my chin, and he pulls me back to face him. “Bullshit,
Cherry, what the fuck is going on?”
I sigh. “It’s fine,” I say. “Honestly, nothing a few drinks won’t solve.”
His eyes narrow. “Tell me this isn’t about that limped dick asshole?” he
snarls.
I press my lips together to stop the laughter from bubbling out. Derek
has always hated Vinny, there was just something about him that Derek
took an instant dislike to, and he always made sure that I and Vinny knew it.
“We broke up,” I say, trying to hide the emotion in my voice.
It hurts. It really fucking hurts. That asshole was someone that I had
loved. I had put seven years into that relationship. I had made sacrifices
upon sacrifices just to ensure that he could live out his dream. In turn, he
becomes a doctor, as he had wanted, and then he cheats on me in our own
damned house. Which is also another reason that I’m beyond pissed. I’ve
had to find an apartment to live in and the only one that was available was a
crappy studio apartment that costs a hell of a lot more than it should. I’m
also positive that there’s mice or rats in that apartment block.
