RAINER
Years earlier (debut season)
Rain leaned his elbows on the table, his eyes peering over at Maxwell
Graham. He could tell there was something off. Max was awfully quiet and
not joking around like he normally would. Did something happen on his
date last night with Mandy? In Max’s defense, there wasn’t a lot of time to
be by yourself while training for a debut as a boy band, let alone time for a
relationship. If he was stressed, it would be understandable. It was one of
the reasons Spring Magic—more specifically, Producer Moon—had
insisted on a “no dating” clause for the members of Save Me.

Max only got away with it because he was the oldest, plus he’d already
been involved with Mandy when he got chosen for the group. He insisted
the label allow him to continue seeing her in secret and out of the public
eye. Rain knew it was hard on Max as they had spent quite a few nights
discussing whether or not he should continue seeing her. Rain wished he
had more advice for Max, as he sensed that Max was trying to break it off
with her but just didn’t know how. All he could do was listen and be his
friend. Rain had only ever had random hookups, never a serious
relationship. He couldn’t even pretend to know anything about what Max
was going through. He’d never cared enough for one person to continue a
relationship.

Still, Max seemed very withdrawn and not at all like himself. Rain
caught Max’s eyes over the table and furrowed his brow at him. Max shook
his head and looked back down at his bowl of cereal, which he wasn’t really
eating but just stirring around. Hmmmm. Something was totally wrong.
Max pushed his chair back, the legs scraping on the floor, walked over
to the sink, and washed his uneaten cereal down the drain. Without saying a
word, he walked out of the noisy kitchen where all the boys were talking
over breakfast. Rain couldn’t really blame him; this group of seven could
really be super loud in any situation, and breakfast was no exception.
Rain followed Max out, grabbing his elbow to talk to him. But when
Rain made contact with Max’s skin, he flinched, yanking his arm away.
What the hell?

Rain quickly released him, an apology in his eyes.
“Hey, Max. Everything, okay? You seem, I don’t know, down today.
Did something happen with Mandy last night?” Rain kept his voice low to
not let the others hear.

“It’s fine, Rain,” Max said, blowing him off. “She just didn’t like what I
had to say. I tried to end it. She just couldn’t hear it. It was long and drawn
out and well, she wouldn’t believe me when I said I wanted to break up.
