Present time.
New York City, NY,
In the darkest, oldest, dustiest corner of the Magiks Memorial Archive,
Emma Julia Tate studied the frail, old page in her hands. The small sheet
was rough and yellow, with no watermarks. Words were carved in brown
cursive, with the elaborate flourish and careful penmanship typical for a
rich and well-educated girl of that period. She ran the tip of her finger on
the old paper as a tear crossed her moon-pale cheek.

Mystic Hollow
My Dearest Abigail,
I hope this letter finds you well.
My heart is shattered, but I want to, need to tell you the events
that have left a mark on my soul, something that will haunt me
since the day I’ll die.
It’s hard to say what I witnessed.
They killed them, Abigail.
A couple living in a modest hut, in a clearing where the forest
thickens.
They said they were werewolves.
I can’t say there’s any truth to the charges because they never
harmed anyone. Their love for the wildest part of the forest,
though peculiar, didn’t hurt anyone.
Father Miller led the crowd to them. My Father told me to stay in
the house, but I slipped past the servants and joined the little
crowd.
Father Miller’s was fierce in his accusations, calling them agents
of the Devil, here to harm our community. When they started hitting
them, I had to close my eyes, but I will never forget the screams,
both of anger and terror.
It’s been raining nonstop since that night, as if the sky knows
what happened.
I trust you but please, don’t write back about it. If my father
finds out I’m upset, he might start suspecting me too.
I will find peace, Abigail, praying for Lucas’ and Grace’s souls. I
whisper their names every night, hoping they will find some kind of
justice and peace up in heaven.
Yours in heartache,
Eleanor
