“HI THERE, WELCOME TO Cedar Lakes University, where learning is
our life. How can I help you this fine morning?”
Oh, hell no. This girl is way too peppy. Way too perfect. Way too, just…
ugh. My eyes almost roll back into my head, but I stop myself. Well, I try. I
can already feel my trademark scowl deepening as she smiles at me. I did
not caffeinate enough for this. It isn’t bad enough the eight-hour drive from
California almost killed me to get here, but this? It’s too much. I need to be
eased in to this much enthusiasm.

Peopling is hard.
The girl in question isn’t deterred by my scowl, thrusting some brightly
colored papers into my hands at my non-answer. The top one is hot pink
and reads, ‘Come to our mixer to have fun and meet friends.’ There’s that
vomit wanting to rise again. Swallowing it down, I focus on the perfect
blonde cheerleader in her burgundy and white outfit, pom-poms placed
directly to her left on the table—you know in case of a cheer emergency—
and I grimace hard.

“I need to get to East Hall dorms.”
She falters at my bluntness but doesn’t let that megawatt smile dim for
long.

Her eyes rake over my tatty band t-shirt, my ripped jeans, scuffed boots.
As her attention snags on my lip piercing sitting to the left of my lower lip
when I fiddle with it, then push my wilder than wild blonde curls out of my
face. I clear my throat suddenly feeling the weight of my violin case in my
hand, as I begin to shift my feet. I’m betting she’s putting an idea in her
head about me right about now. The loner musician girl who has no money
and no friends. Whatever, I need directions to get to my dorm, and if she’s
my ticket for that, then I’ll grit my teeth and use my big girl words.

“Oh, sure.” She recovers, blinking a few times. “What’s your name?”
“Indiana Beck.”

She scans through a list on her table, dragging her perfectly manicured
nails down a sheet of paper, and taps it when she finds my name. “Here you
are,” she sing-songs, reaching underneath the table before passing me my
keycard. “Your dorm is to the left of this building behind me, so follow it all
the way through the courtyard, and voila, you’re there.”

I stare at her easy smile, waiting for the moment she’s going to blurt
something snarky at me. Every cheerleader in high school taught me never
to trust them, but she actually seems…genuine? Either way, I shake my
head. I need to get away from all this cheeriness, I swear it’s beginning to
affect my brain chemistry. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be here—
really fucking happy for how hard it was getting this scholarship—it’s just
all internal joy. My RBF is firmly in place. I take the keycard, grunt a
