RAVEN
The fluorescent lights of the Gas ‘N Go convenience store buzzed
overhead, grating on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard. I sighed,
leaning against the counter and staring blankly at the dingy tiles. Another
endless shift trapped behind this register, scanning greasy hot dogs and
overpriced gallons of milk. The monotony was suffocating.
I envied the customers who breezed in and out, free to grab a soda or snacks
on their way to someplace more exciting. My life had become an endless
loop of wake up, work, sleep, repeat. I yearned for adventure, for meaning,
for something more than this dull existence. But the dreams of pursuing my
passions remained out of reach, and here I find myself, trapped behind this
counter.
My fingers drummed impatiently on chipped Formica as I glanced up at the
clock for what felt like the hundredth time. Only ten minutes had passed
since I last checked. Ten excruciatingly slow minutes of standing behind
this register with twenty minutes to go until the end of my shift.
I stifled a yawn and tucked a strand of white-blonde hair behind my ear,
scanning the snack shelves and coolers packed full of drinks, devoid of any
late-night customers on this dull Tuesday evening. Boredom consumed me
as I longed to escape this place. Longed to escape this shitty little town.
The chime of the entrance bell shook me from my thoughts. The door
swung open with a rush of cool air. I turned to see who had entered but
found no one there. The silence in the store felt heavy and eerie, like a ghost
had passed through and left a chill in its wake.
“Hello?” My voice echoed off all the emptiness.
I shivered, tugging my sweater tighter around my shoulders. It was just the
wind blowing open the door.
There’s no one here but me, I shook off the heebs and silently chastised
myself.
Time would go by faster if I did something to stay busy. Maybe cram more
bags of chips on the racks.
As I wandered to the storeroom for more chips, I felt like I was
sleepwalking through a haze of boredom and restlessness. What was I doing
with my life? The same routine, day after day, my youth wasting away
under the harsh lighting of a convenience store. I longed to feel alive. There
had to be something more for me out there than this.
My mouth opened in a silent scream as the box of snack-sized chips slipped
from my hands. The creature with beady eyes and a slashing mouth pointed
a black box at me, and an ammonia fog wafted over me, stealing my breath,
dimming my vision.
Then, darkness…
I JERKED awake to the sound of a metal door banging open. Blinking hard,
my eyes adjusted to the dim glow emanating from thin bars lining the front
of my cage. I was trapped inside one among hundreds of metal boxes,
stacked one atop the other. Each box imprisoned a single girl, their sleeping
faces illuminated by the eerie glow of the light bars holding us captive.
