My mother says I’m spoiled. My father says I’m a Waters and I know
who I am. He always says this with a smile of pride, and it’s the only time I
see him look at me like that. Still, my brother says I’m just a little high
maintenance, and this is often accompanied by a shoulder bump or a head
pat. My Grammy, before she died, would shake her head and say I was
ruined before I even started. I know these things aren’t good, but I live in a
world of riches, and anything I want, I get. It’s hard to be worried about that
when the world is so exciting. The silver spoon I was born with has never
tasted sweeter than it does today on my eighteenth birthday.
I have plans. I’m going to storm society, find my pack, even if I have to
fly to every corner of this world. They’re going to fall desperately in love
with me and be rich and famous, and we’ll be happy forevermore.
It’s going to be perfect.
I reach up and delicately touch my hair, adjusting a single strand back
into its perfect cascade of curls. The woman in the mirror is young and
excited. I know I’m beautiful and rich, draped in the most lavish of dresses,
living in a mansion that is simply a modern day castle. Nothing is out of my
reach.
“Are you happy with it, Miss Waters?” The dull-looking maid intones in
an emotionless voice. She’s worked here for months, but I still can’t
remember her name.
“Hazel, call me Hazel,” I say absently. “It will do.”
The woman bobs her head and exits my bedroom, silently pulling the
door closed.
I’m finally eighteen, which means I can start the search for my alphas.
We’ve always known I’d be an omega, anyone who met me knew, so when
I presented, no one was surprised. We already had suppressants and a place
for me to wait out the wild mood swings and emotions of my designation
reveal.
I swish down the stairs, barely acknowledging the maid standing silently
against the wall.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see her frown, but I toss my hair and
continue down the hallway of my giant mansion. I inherited it today,
ironically. It’s a beautiful two-story, modern house with all the securities
and luxuries. Including several stunning artworks that make my fingers itch
to go to my ‘secret room’ and pull out my paints. It’s a generous gift from
my absent parents. I hate it.
My parents haven’t had much to do with the raising of Grayson and
myself. But they have spies, and those spies bring my parents’ unwanted
opinions and lectures down upon our heads.
Gray has tried really hard to explain why I shouldn’t resent the spies,
oops, I mean staff, but I don’t care about their jobs or them. They can find
positions, surely? Especially if they have loyalty only to my parents.
