1816, The Rose and Thistle Inn, Scotland
The wind had picked up and whistled through the branches of the trees
that lined the roadway. And the drizzle of rain that had been
bothersome for the past hour had now turned to sharp prickles of ice as the
temperature began to fall. The village and inn were just ahead and Camden
Davenport, Duke of Stafford would be glad to get out of the inclement
weather. This was the last stop on the journey back to McDonough Castle.
The trip from Edinburgh to the Highlands had been long and tiresome with
the ever-changing weather of Scotland, at times he had wished that they had
traveled by carriage rather than on horseback. Traveling by horseback was
faster and preferred by his friend and traveling companion, John Cavendish,
and he did have to admit that being cooped up inside a conveyance for days
was never something he enjoyed, besides the fact that he was anxious to
reach their destination.
Cavendish disliked being in a carriage even less than he did himself. He
and Cavendish had been through much together over the past eight years.
During the war with France, when Napoleon tried to conquer Britain, Cam
served as a spy and an assassin. For many years he had lived in the
shadows, walking a fine line between being a hero to his country or
becoming a monster.
He had killed many men, all in service to the crown,
and had even become known to the French as Ange de la Mort, the Angel of
Death. Through everything, John Cavendish had been his right-hand man,
from smuggling goods, as well as information, through the French lines to
nursing him back to health after being shot after a mission didn’t go as
planned. Now that the war between France and England was over and
Napoleon was exiled, John was still by his side and would serve him as his
estate steward.
It was estate business that had brought them to Edinburgh and now that
it was concluded, Cam thought it would be an excellent time to return to the
home of his good friend Ian McDonough, Duke of Sunbridge. Ian had
recently married and was in residence at his estate, McDonough Castle in
the Scottish Highlands. Cam wanted to spend at least a month there hoping
to find some time to relax and perhaps enjoy some fishing before it was
time to return to his estate in Sussex and then on to London for the season.
Another cold gust of wind seemed to go through him as they neared the
village. He could see smoke billowing from the chimney of the small twostory white stone building with a thatched roof where Cavendish had
already secured them a room for the night. As they rode up to the Rose and
Thistle, Davenport could hear voices coming from inside the inn the
moment his horse stopped out front.
The sun was just beginning to set
leaving the sky bathed in a deep purple hue, and the wind was getting
colder by the minute. He was glad to have finally reached the inn and was
looking forward to a hot meal, some hearty ale, and hopefully some peace
and quiet.
