Branthor
The first day of spring. The mountain peaks were covered in thick snow
that glowed in the sun, and the vale was lush green under the cloudless sky.
Such a beautiful day had to be celebrated, and what better way to do that
than to spend it with family?
“Branthor, is the meat ready?” my brother, Orion, yelled from the
backyard.
“One minute,” I yelled back as I added a fistful of crushed herbs to the
thick slices of boar meat I’d just cut and laid out on the table before me.
“This is art. It needs time.”
My brother grumbled something, then I heard him and my two other
brothers, Kairos and Ragnar, laugh. I shook my head and minded my own
business. Lately, they had been talking behind my back, laughing and
making jokes, and it was always something about how I was lonely and
needed a wife.
In fact, I was not lonely. I was perfectly fine on my own, and I did not
need a wife.
I had eyes. I could see how hard it was for Orion and his wife, Maren,
with their two daughters, and Ragnar and Nova weren’t doing any better
with their son, Maverick, whose personality was true to his name. Now
Kairos and Holly had a little one on the way, and soon, they would have to
kiss their good night’s sleep goodbye.
I, Branthor, the youngest of the four brothers, was the only one who
could sleep when I wanted to, work when I felt like it, not work when I
didn’t feel like it, and not worry that the laundry basket was full, and the
dishes had formed a wobbly tower in the sink.
I was living the life, and I very much wanted it to stay that way. No, I
wasn’t lonely one bit, thank you very much. At this point, I was starting to
think my brothers wanted me to get a wife and start a family so I would be
sleep-deprived like them.
I rubbed the herbs into the boar meat, transferred it onto a large plate,
then washed my hands in the sink. Holly came in through the door that led
to the back porch.
“Do you need help?” she asked, reaching for the plate I’d just loaded.
“No, no.” I hurried to take it before she tried to. “I got it.”
She smiled at me, her hands going to her round belly. I stepped outside,
where my brothers were waiting and drinking ale. The fire for the barbecue
was slowly turning to embers. I joined them, and we started placing the
meat on the grill.
Meanwhile, Holly joined Nova and Maren, who were
chopping vegetables for a huge salad. Watching her, I shook my head and
thought to myself, “What was she thinking? She couldn’t have lifted the
plate all by herself.”
