The frost-covered gravel crunched beneath Lizzie Meecham, Lady
Elborough’s feet as she approached the grand facade of the Earl of St.
Ervan’s magnificent house. A frisson of excitement and anticipation coursed
through her, eager to reunite with her dear friend Verity, Lady St. Ervan, the
hostess of the Christmas party. While Lizzie and a few guests would be
staying for an entire week, Verity had told her that the neighbors were invited
to most of the activities, including the grand ball scheduled for the final night.

“Welcome, Lady Elborough,” said the butler at the door, pulling it wide to
allow her to enter. “Lady St. Ervan is most eager for your arrival.”
A footman in navy livery scurried past her to the carriage, where the
driver was setting down Lizzie’s bags.

“Thank you,” Lizzie said.
As she stepped into the lavishly adorned foyer, the mingled scents of pine
and cinnamon enveloped her senses, stirring memories of joyous Christmases
past. For a moment, her heart swelled with a bittersweet longing for the
holidays spent with her late husband, but she quickly brushed the sentiment
aside, determined to embrace the festivities before her. She handed her cloak,
bonnet and gloves to her maid, who followed the footman upstairs.

“Ah, Lizzie! You’ve arrived!” Verity’s exuberant voice rang through the
entrance hall, and Lizzie could not help but smile at the sight of her friend.
“Verity, darling,” Lizzie greeted, their hands clasping together like
reunited sisters. “Your home looks enchanting. I am delighted to be here.”

“Come, let me introduce you to some guests,” Verity said, her eyes alight
with excitement. As they entered the drawing room, Lizzie’s gaze swept
across the well-heeled crowd, her mind cataloging each person with practiced
ease.

“Ah, I see the Duke of Teversham has made his appearance while I was
upstairs,” Verity remarked, her voice a mere whisper in Lizzie’s ear.
Following her friend’s gaze, Lizzie’s eyes fell upon a tall and handsome
gentleman, with wavy brown hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed to hold
secrets untold. She felt a flutter low in her belly as she looked him over. He
was slender, just the way she preferred her lovers, but his thighs were
muscular, suggesting the rest of him might also be, which was a bonus in her
eyes. “Oh, my,” Lizzie replied.

“Keep your wits about you, dear Lizzie,” Verity teased, her low voice
laced with amusement. “It is said that the duke is quite adept at stealing
hearts.”

“Is that so?” Lizzie murmured thoughtfully. She had no fears where her
heart was concerned. Her late husband Alfred would always have full
possession there.

“I know you are particular when it comes to choosing your lovers,” Verity
continued. “And I know you want no entanglements, which he’s not known
for. He might seem the ideal choice, but be careful. His charm…oh, that man.
He’s worse than St. Ervan when it comes to seduction. No, that doesn’t sound
