The Borderlands stretched before Aric like a gaping wound. Out here,
beyond the protection of the wards, only the most stubborn or
foolhardy lived, scraping out lives from the desolate expanse of
broken earth and jagged rock shrouded in a thick haze of smoke. The
ground beneath Aric’s boots was charred and cracked, blackened by the
countless battles fought here over the centuries. An acrid scent stung his
nose, sulfur and ash mingling in the thick air, and an oppressive heat bore
down on him from all sides. Despite the stillness of the air, there was a
palpable sense of danger here, like the world was holding its breath around
them, just waiting for something to happen.
Aric scanned the horizon as he led his patrol through the wasteland. The
Borderlands were always dangerous, but they’d been growing more so of
late. Demonic incursions were on the rise, and even though the Silver
Tower had dispatched several battalions like Aric’s to fortify their defenses,
it hadn’t been enough to keep the demons at bay. They’d been forced to
evacuate outpost after outpost as the demons pushed forward, and the strain
was starting to show.
Aric glanced over his shoulder to check on his squad. They were a
motley crew scavenged from the main Pureblade Order outpost—mages
and paladins, warriors and healers—but they were his to protect, alongside
his Pureblade counterpart, and he’d be damned if he let any of them come
to harm. They were counting on him to keep them safe, to lead them
through this hellish landscape and back to the safety of the Silver Tower’s
wards.
He caught the eye of one of the younger mages, Kaelan—a boy with a
shock of red hair and a nervous tremor to his hands. Aric offered him a
small, reassuring smile, and the boy straightened, his chin lifting with
newfound resolve. Aric saw himself in that boy, not so long ago—a young
mage eager to prove himself, to make a difference in the world. He only
hoped the boy’s fate would be kinder than his own.
“Solarian. A word.”
Aric’s boots crunched against the broken stone as he made his way over
to Commander Jesrick’s side. The man was a hulking figure, his armor
dented and worn from countless skirmishes, but his eyes were sharp as they
fixed on Aric. There was no love lost between them; the battlemages of the
Silver Tower and the Pureblades had never seen eye to eye on much, and
Aric’s reputation within their ranks only made matters worse.
“What can I do for you, Commander?”
Jesrick jerked his head toward the horizon. “You know this land better
than most. What do you expect to find out here?”
“A demon scouting party, most likely.” Aric squinted into the distance.
“They’ve been getting bolder of late. Testing our defenses.”
Jesrick grunted. “And you think their scouts would test their luck with
our patrol?”
