IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE COME TO
THIS
It wasn’t that I wanted to do this. No. I took no pleasure in what I was
about to do. But it was necessary. Rumors were circulating—Selene had
seen to that—Grant had been arrested, and a price needed to be paid. In
blood. And I was the only one willing to make sure that price was paid by
everyone involved.
It was nearly two in the morning, and the bar would be closing soon. I
had sat parked in a stolen delivery van near Elixir for hours, watching
various patrons enter and exit until I saw Sam go in at around eleven. Then
I’d repositioned the van, pulling it in to the delivery area. Elixir wasn’t the
most ideal for what I had planned, but it was where Sam liked to drink and
pick up women, so I didn’t have much choice.
I supposed I could have done this when he was still at home, but there
was some satisfaction in knowing his dick would be his downfall. I had
gotten lucky—perhaps that was the wrong term… luck had nothing to do
with finding my like-minded and eager partner for this endeavor. Carrie had
firsthand experience in what men like Sam were like. And tonight,
everything hinged on her doing her part.
I was about to give up hope that she’d be successful, when I saw
Elixir’s side door open, and she stumbled out with Sam. I felt a sick sort of
happiness that he’d taken the bait. Carrie looked different from the last time
I’d seen her. She had dark-brown hair, which she wore in a pixie cut, but
now she was wearing a blonde wig that fell just past her shoulders. I
imagined she’d put in colored contacts as well, changing her normally
brown eyes to blue. At least that was the plan. And I had planned this out
down to the very last detail, instructing her in all of it.
I’d been over the scenario of what would happen in my head so many
times. I’d seen how I wanted it to play out and I’d tried to plan for every
way in which it could go wrong. For now, everything seemed to be going as
I had intended.
She laughed and the sound carried on the breeze through the open
window of the van. It sounded like fairies ringing little bells, and
completely fake. Sam seemed not to notice though. He was all in on what
he thought was about to go down.
My gloved fingers tightened on the steering wheel as I watched him
push her up against the brick wall of the building between the bar and the
fish market. They were in a small delivery parking lot that was nearly dark.
No building lights operated there.
I could tell that Sam was starting to get rough with her, and I wondered
how long I should let this go on. I wanted to make sure he was good and
distracted so he wouldn’t notice me. It would be best if he didn’t see me.
Not at this point, at any rate.
